Standing man representing a statue 1657 Attributed to Master of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian Austrian This serene figure is believed to have been part of an elaborate composite relief of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, now in Linz, Austria; some of the original elements have long been dispersed. Ivory suited the style of the anonymous mid-seventeenth-century Austrian sculptor, who took great delight in portraying extreme corporeality, even in this personal take on the famed Roman marble called the Farnese Hercules. Marble statue of Aphrodite. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. with plinth 62 1/2 in. (158.8 cm). Date: 1st or 2nd century A.D..Copy of a Greek statue of the 3rd or 2nd century B.C.The lower legs have been restored with casts taken from the Roman copy in Florence known as the Medici Venus.The goddess of love is shown as though surprised at her bath. Originally, her arms reached forward to shield her breasts and pubis in a gesture that both concealed and accentuated her sexuality. Statues of Aphrodite in the nude proliferated during the Hellenistic period. All were inspired to some degree by the Aphrodite of Knidos, created in the fourth century B.C. by the famous Greek sculptor Praxiteles. That statue, the first major Greek work to show the goddess nude, was celebrated throughout antiquity. This work has the same gesture of modesty and is similar to another Roman copy, the so-called Medici Venus, which has stood in the Tribuna of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1688. Museum: Metro

(46.99 cm), Bronze, Italy, 18th century, Captivated by the beauty of the shepherd Ganymede, Zeus transformed himself into an eagle and abducted the youth, whom he then installed as cupbearer to the gods on Mount Olympus for eternity. In most representations, the mortal shepherd boy is shown overpowered by the formidable eagle, but here Ganymede stands upright and engages with the eagle through a gesture of affection and familiarity. This friendly pairing suggests that Ganymedes ascent to Mount Olympus was not so much an abduction but a joyful transcendence from the earthly realm to the divine.

Roman In this graceful pose, Aphrodite was represented with both arms raised, wringing water from her hair, as though she were just emerging from the sea, where she was born. Sometimes thought to derive from a famous painting, statues with this graceful motif were extremely popular. Here, a narrow band is carved in relief on either shoulder, perhaps to indicate a fillet with which the goddess binds up her locks.. Crucified Christ ca. 1260-80 French The suffering of Christ on the cross was so important in Gothic art that the mid-thirteenth-century statute of the corporations of Paris included a guild dedicated to the carving of such images, including ones in ivory. This ivory sculpture of Christ, whose pathos and agony are beautifully conveyed, was executed in the round and most certainly was intended for an altar cross. In spite of the loss of both arms and parts of the legs (which originally were attached to the body by means of pegs), the modeling of the figure reveals a profound sensitivity to form and expression. The powerful anatomical structureportraying, naturally, the corporeality of the dying Christis remarkable for a crucifix of this period. The closed eyes and the long hair, which falls down the back and right side of the head, reveal the emotional impact of death. A subtle twist in the torso was produced in part by the positioning of the legs, which were crossed and mounted on the

Greek The figure wears a body cuirass (breastplate and backplate), which is detectable only along bottom edge where the vertical folds of a short chiton are visible. This type of cuirass was no longer in fashion in the 1st century B.C., when the relief was carved, but was commonly used in sculpture for heroic figures. Christno longer an infant, but a young childsprawls on a bed of straw, his head thrown back in slumber and his right arm dangling. The simple radiance framing his head indicates his divinity. Representations of the sleeping Christ child were enduringly popular, not only because of the subject’s inherent charm, but sleep, as a metaphor for death, encouraged pious Christians to meditate on Christ’s humanity and his eventual suffering and death. Filippo Parodi’s Sleeping Christ Child beguiles with lifelike detail.
