Dancer Bowing (First State) modeled possibly ca. 1878-80, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. The quality of the Degas bronzes was tightly controlled and their edition was limited.

Reclining Naiad 1819-24 Antonio Canova Italian This is a variant of the Reclining Venus with Cupid, now in Buckingham Palace, which was made for Lord Cawdor in 1814 and ceded by him to the Prince Regent. Our work, commissioned by the fourth earl of Darnley, was completed by Canova's assistents after his death and delivered to the earl at Cobham Hall in Kent in 1824. The original plaster model for the Naiad, completed in 1817, is in the Gipsoteca di Possagno. Compositional prototypes include Canova's Pauline Borghese as Venus Victrix and an ancient Hermaphrodite, both in the Borghese Gallery, Rome. At the Threshold 1912; carved 1919-20 Edith Woodman Burroughs American The smooth, simplified treatment of this lifesize adolescent female on the verge of womanhood was inspired by Burroughss 1909 trip to Paris, where she admired the sculpture of modernist artist Aristide Maillol. The original tinted plaster version of "At the Threshold" was exhibited widely, including at the Berlin Photographic Company in New York, where Burroughs had her first solo exhibition in 1915, just a year before her death. In 1918 it was included in a long-term exhibition of American sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum. The following year the Metropolitan and the sculptors widower Bryson Burroughs, then its curator of paintings, arranged to have “At the Threshold” carved in limestone and tinted to resemble the original plaster figure.. Plaster Casts of Bodies, Pompeii ca. 1875 Giorgio Sommer Italian, born Germany Much as photography fixes a moment in time, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24 in a.d. 79 preserved the city of Pompeii in eerie detail. Fascination with the site began with its excavation in the mid-eighteenth century and continues to this day. Sommer’s studio supplied views of Pompeii and other popular tourist destinations in Italy, Switzerland, and Austria in the era before visitors were equipped to make their own photographic records. Adopting the viewpoint of a gawking spectator, Sommer’s image offers a startlingly graphic perspective on casts formed by pouring plaster into the voids left where human remains had been engulfed by volcanic ash and mud.
