Summer 1800-1810 American Personifications of the four seasons were common subjects for engravers and printmakers in the eighteenth century, but carved wood statuettes such as these are exceedingly rare. In this set of figurines (1971.180.83-.86), the seasons are identified by their attributes: Spring by flowers, Summer by wheat, Autumn by a basket of fruit, and Winter by a muff. Other than for ships figureheads, there was little demand in the United States for sculptural carving during this time period. Reliefs with a representation of the deceased and a short identifying inscription were used to seal burial niches in elaborately decorated communal tombs; those with a half-length or bust format became prevalent sometime after A.D. 65. After this early period, full-length representations such as this relief were used more frequently for memorials to children rather than adults. Shown here is a young man or boy in high relief facing directly toward the viewer, dressed in a Greek cloak known as a himation, worn over a chiton, or tunic

P.J.H. In 1882 Cuypers wrote a competition for designing stained glass windows for the front hall of the Rijksmuseum. He invited six artists to participate and send a test window with Apelles. Altar Angel (one of a pair). Culture: French. Dimensions: 29 1/2 in. × 7 in. × 7 11/16 in. (75 × 17.8 × 19.5 cm). Date: ca. 1275-1300.This figure, along with its pair (acc. no. 52.33.2) probably once held either candlesticks or instruments of the Passion. Deriving in style from the smiling angels on the west facade of Reims Cathedral, such works were placed around an altar. They stood on top of small columns that supported rods on which curtains were hung. The angels were originally painted in rich colors and gold. Their upward trailing wings are now lost. Marble statue of a woman. Culture: Greek. Dimensions: Overall (H. w/ plinth): 68 1/8 in. (173 cm)H. (H. without plinth): 66 1/8 in. (168 cm). Date: 2nd half of the 4th century B.C..The lively, varied manner in which the texture of the clothing is rendered suggests that this is a Greek original rather than a Roman copy. The crinkly linen of the chiton and the heavier wool of the himation (cloak) are carefully differentiated, and horizontal press folds add variety to the latter's surface. The drilled holes on the sleeves once held metal buttons. The upper part of the chiton is kept firmly in place by a cord that is crossed in back and slipped over the arms. This over-life size figure probably represents a goddess, and in the absence of other attributes, the shoulder cord may offer a clue to her identity. Although the huntress Artemis is often shown with such a cord, this more matronly figure may represent Themis, a goddess associated with custom and law. The head and neck were carved s
