The Chariot of Aurora 1760s Giovanni Battista Tiepolo Italian Aurora, in her chariot, is accompanied by the Hours and heralded by Apollo; the figure of Time is on the right. Also recognizable are Ceres, with a sheaf of wheat, and Bacchus, wearing a crown of vine leaves. The sketch may have been presented as a proposal by Tiepolo for the decoration of a ceiling in the Palacio Real in Madrid. Tiepolo was summoned to Spain in 1762 to decorate the throne room; a ceiling on this theme was painted in the queen's bedroom in 1763 by the artist's German rival, Anton Raphael Mengs.. Watercolor and black chalk on two sheets of cream laid paper; image: 23.8 x 34.1 cm (9 3/8 x 13 7/16 in.); mounted: 34 x 44 cm (13 3/8 x 17 5/16 in.). Natoire produced this drawing based on a fresco by Guillaume Courtois, known as Il Borgognone (1628-1679), that decorates a vaulted ceiling in the Palazzo Dorio-Pamphili in Valmontone. Carrying his trident, Neptune skims the ocean waves in a chariot attended by the gods Nereus and Oceanus, his son, Triton, and a dolphin. Able to raise tempests and calm the sea, Neptune gestures toward darkened clouds where two blowing faces personify the winds. Natoires fluid brushstrokes and vibrant use of color exemplify the characteristic sensuality of his watercolors.

Saint Michael the Archangel. Artist: Ignacio de Ries (Spanish, 1616-after 1665). Dimensions: 64 3/4 x 43 1/4 in. (164.5 x 109.9 cm). Date: 1640s.Ries was the son of a Flemish painter who had settled in Seville. In the mid-1630s he worked for Zurbarán, some of whose paintings are displayed in this gallery and to whom this picture was long attributed. Now recognized as one of Ries's finest works, dating from the 1640s, this painting relates to both Flemish and Italian traditions. Apollo and Aurora 1671 Gerard de Lairesse Dutch Largely forgotten today, De Lairesse was celebrated in his lifetime as a painter and advocate for an idealizing manner based on the study of classical antiquity. This work, likely destined to hang over the mantelpiece in a grand Amsterdam home, depicts the sun god consorting with the goddess of the dawn, a popular subject in French and Italian painting at the time. The attractively individualized young faces have led to speculation that they may be disguised portraits of a newly married couple.
