Sofronia of taranto; Sophronia Tarentina; Female hermits; Solitvdo Sive Vitae Foeminarvm Anachoritarvm. The local Italian sofronia of taranto in the wilderness. She writes her name in a tree. In the middle of the print she is covered after her death with leaves by birds of the forest. For example, she is discovered by passers-by, bringing her corpse in procession back to Taranto. The print has a Latin caption and is part of a series of twenty-four prints with the subject of female hermits.

Embroidered Picture ca. 1855 Mary Ann Parks Hammond "Berlin work" pictures, such as this one, became a needlework craze during the mid-nineteenth century. Not truly schoolgirl embroidery, Berlin work took little skill and was practiced by leisured ladies of all ages. It was designed to be sewn using only one type of stitch, usually tent stitch or cross stitch, on canvas mesh. The commercially produced patterns were drawn in color on grided paper. After the pattern was purchased, it was copied onto the mesh, with each square in the grid equaling one stitch. The designs for Berlin work, which got its name from the German worsted wool used to stitch it, were often large elaborate scenes from history or the Bible. As a young woman's ability to make clothes and linens for her family became less and less important with the rise of mechanization, projects such as Berlin work pictures filled time, although they did not encourage creativity or teach advanced sewing skills.. These twelve drawings depict scenes from the French novel The Adventures of Telemachus (Les aventures de TÈlÈmaque) by FranÁois FÈnelon. First published in 1699, it was one of the most popular books of the 1700s and 1800s.Telemachus is the son of Ulysses from Homerís Odyssey, the first four books of which describe the heroís search for his father. FÈnelon invented further adventures for Telemachus, in which he undergoes many trials while accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is actually the goddess Minerva (the embodiment of wisdom) in human disguise.
