Greece. Metope of the Parthenon (5th century BC). Scene from the Centauromachy. Mythical centaurs fought with the Lapiths. The combat took place during the wedding celebrations of Pirithous, King of the Lapiths, at which the drunken centaurs attempted to abduct the wives of their hosts. At the right of the east frieze the north part of the procession comes to an end with two marshals, the first receiving two women and the second receiving another two without holding anything. The girl holds an imphalos phiale while the girl beside her turns toward the next girl so as to help her carry an incense burner. This must have been the time when many of the heads of the figures were cut off.

This illustration shows the clay relief by Harry Bates of Homer, with the caption: a blind man sweetest he sings. The famed Greek epic poet Homer is said to have flourished around 700 B.C. Credited to him are the Greek epics, The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Greeks often portrayed Homer as blind. Blindness was also symbolic of inner vision. Harry Bates (1850 -1899) was a Britishsculptor.
