Date: 1568-70.Battista Lorenzi was a Florentine sculptor who apprenticed with Baccio Bandinelli (see acc. no. 1987.280) and collaborated in Rome with Vincenzo de' Rossi on a monumental statue of Pope Paul IV (destroyed by a mob in 1559). After his return to his native city (by 1563), he found success with wealthy clients, producing statues and fountains for their estates in and around Florence. Early works of this nature include a cycle of statues of the four seasons for Giovambattista Guadagni (sent to that abbot's French residence and now lost); a Triton with Dolphins for Cosimo I de' Medici (Galleria Regionale, Palermo); and an attributed figure of Ganymede (Boboli Gardens, Florence).1 We know from Raffaello Borghini's famed account of art in Florenc

300 years old statue of Abundance in an Italian park, no need of release

Marble statue of Aphrodite 1st or 2nd century A.D. Roman Copy of a Greek statue of the 3rd or 2nd century B.C.The lower legs have been restored with casts taken from the Roman copy in Florence known as the Medici Venus.The goddess of love is shown as though surprised at her bath. Originally, her arms reached forward to shield her breasts and pubis in a gesture that both concealed and accentuated her sexuality. Statues of Aphrodite in the nude proliferated during the Hellenistic period. All were inspired to some degree by the Aphrodite of Knidos, created in the fourth century B.C. by the famous Greek sculptor Praxiteles. That statue, the first major Greek work to show the goddess nude, was celebrated throughout antiquity. This work has the same gesture of modesty and is similar to another Roman copy, the so-called Medici Venus, which has stood in the Tribuna of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1688. The Struggle of the Two Natures in Man. Artist: George Grey Barnard (American, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania 1863-1938 New York). Dimensions: 101 x 102 x 48 in. (256.5 x 259.1 x 121.9 cm). Date: 1888; carved 1892-94.While living in Paris, Barnard labored on this work-- his most famous--for over six years. After the single block of marble was roughed out in Italy, Barnard finished carving the sculpture himself. In 1894, he exhibited it in Paris under the title Je sens deux hommes en moi I sense two men in myself . While the symbolism of the group eludes definitive interpretation, Barnard used sculpture to explore all aspects of the human condition; here, the figures are treated dramatically in order to evoke the inner life of man. Date: 27 B.C.-A.D. 68.This statue and the similar work, 2003.407.9 were probably part of a statuary group portraying and honoring members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that ruled Rome from the time of Augustus to that of Nero. The stance of these partially nude figures brings to mind the canonic works of Polykleitos, one of the most famous Greek sculptors of the fifth century B.C., and was almost certainly intended to give a heroizing aura to the statues. It has been argued that the draping of the mantle around the hips and over the arm was a specific iconographic indication that the individual being honored was already deceased.
