This image depicts a female Aedes aegypti mosquito as she was obtaining a blood-meal from a human host through her fascicle, which after penetrating the host's skin, had reddened in color, reflecting the blood's coloration through this tubular structure. In this case, what would normally be an unsuspecting host was actually the CDC's biomedical photographer's own hand, which he'd offered to the hungry mosquito so that she'd alight, and be photographed while feeding. As it filled with blood, the abdomen became distended, stretching the exterior exoskeletal surface, thereby, causing it to become transparent, allowing the collecting blood to become visible as an enlarging intra-abdominal red mass.

Under a very low magnification of 13X, this scanning electron micrograph depicted the entire ventral surface of the larval staged antlion, sometime referred to as a doodlebugs, because of the trails they leave in the soft sand as they hunt for prey. These arthropods undergo dramatic morphologic changes when it metamorphoses into a beautiful flying antlion lacewing. Note the large mandibles to the right, which are used to apprehend prey that unwittingly fall into the conical sand trap construc

High speed exposure of a Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) taken through a microscope. In this image flight muscles express a genetically engineered protein called GCaMP, which fluoresces green in the presence of calcium ions. Because the concentration of calcium increases in muscles as they are activated, the fluorescence provides a direct measurement of the muscle activity. California Institute of Technology, USA, December 2016.
