Lights of Other Days, like many of John F. Petoís still lifes, is replete with nostalgia. Strewn along a shallow shelf above a doorframe is an array of old, well-worn objects candleholders with wax candles nearly used up, rusty oil lamps, and torn books. These discarded commonplace objects allude to older ways of life and fading memories. Peto specialized in trompe líoeil (fools the eye) pictures; yet his soft-edged style is suggestive of the artistís hand rather than the heightened illusionism employed by other trompe líoeil painters such as William Harnett. Trained in Philadelphia, Peto stopped exhibiting his work at professional venues by 1890, creating compositions instead for local patrons near his New Jersey home.. Oil on canvas . (38.1 x 30.48 cm) (canvas), Oil on canvas, Netherlands, 17th century, Many still-life painters showed lavish arrangements of sumptuous food on precious gold and silver platters, but Jan van de Velde specialized in the more middle-class pleasures of tavern life. The pipe is broken. The rope molders away. The oysters, lemons, and wine will be consumed or will spoil. All of these are reminders of the transience of life. The playing cards may symbolize the vagaries of fate, and the wine could indicate redemption through Christ.Still Life, Gerret Willemsz.
