Nature conservationists planting trees on waste land

USACE contractors collect soil samples from cleared debris sites in Lahaina, Hawaii, Feb. 4. Once samples are obtained, they are sent to a lab on the mainland for testing. When sampling is complete, the checklist posted at each property is initialed by the environmental engineer and tools and equipment are thoroughly sanitized prior to use on another site. The team remains safe during sampling by wearing proper personal protective equipment. This includes hard hats, safety vests, steel toe footwear, eye protection and gloves. USACE is overseeing the debris removal mission under a Federal Emergency Management Agency mission assignment, which is part of a coordinated effort with the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, Maui County and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to clean up areas of the island affected by the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires. The red-eared slider turtles are a nonnative species in Oregon, and they compete with native turtles for food and habitat, especially nesting sites. Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers biologists regularly look for and remove the red-eared slider turtle and its eggs from several Willamette Valley Corps locations. In this case, the team found the invasive turtle completing its nest during one of their searches of the areas near Fern Ridge Reservoir. Once the team captures information such as the location of the nest, number of eggs and size of the turtle, the team will transport the turtle and eggs to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
