KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Technicians hook a crane to a jacking, equalization and leveling (JEL) cylinder and bearing on Crawler-Transporter No. 2 in preparation for its removal. During routine maintenance inspections last week, technicians removed two of the 16 JEL cylinders on the crawler to gain access to the bearings and found three of the four bearings cracked. Further eddy current inspections indicated that cracks are present on 15 of the bearings. There are 16 cylinders and 32 bearings per crawler. Engineers are evaluating the situation to determine the cause of the cracks and an appropriate solution to the problem.

Preparations are underway to lift the Orion Service Module Umbilical (OSMU) up for installation on the mobile launcher tower at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mobile launcher tower will be equipped with a number of lines, called umbilicals, that will connect to the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft for Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1). The OSMU will be located high on the mobile launcher tower and, prior to launch, will transfer liquid coolant for the electronics and air for the Environmental Control System to the Orion service module that houses these critical systems to support the spacecraft. EM-1 is scheduled to launch in 2018. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is overseeing installation of the umbilicals.

On Feb. 21, 2017 engineers successfully install ESAs European Service Module Propulsion Qualification Module (PQM) at NASAs White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico that was delivered by Airbus - ESAs prime contractor for the Service Module. The module will be equipped with a total of 21 engines to support NASAs Orion spacecraft: one U.S. Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) engine, eight auxiliary thrusters and 12 smaller thrusters produced by Airbus Safran Launchers in Germany. The all-steel PQM structure is used to test the propulsion systems on Orion, including hot firing of the OMS engine and thrusters.

Contractors work on the new C-17 load trainer facility Feb. 10, 2023, at Young Air Assault Strip on South Post at Fort McCoy, Wis. Contractor Veteran Range Solutions received a contract for $1,497,609 to build the facility at the air assault strip. According to the contract's statement of work, it states to construct a C-17 load trainer, complete with ramp and simulated cargo area with tie downs, and house it within a 3,500 square-foot pre-manufactured metal building. Fort McCoy's motto is to be the Total Force Training Center.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Workers install a flame deflector at the Shuttle Landing Facility, or SLF, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the Project Morpheus lander. The site is adjacent to a hazard field created to support the project at the north end of the SLF. Testing of the prototype lander has been ongoing at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston in preparation for a free flight at Kennedy later this year. The SLF will provide the lander with the kind of field necessary for realistic testing, complete with rocks, craters and hazards to avoid. Morpheus utilizes an autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology, or ALHAT, payload that will allow it to navigate to clear landing sites amidst obstacles during its descent. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A new Doppler weather radar tower is being built in an area near S.R. 520 in Orange County, Florida. The new tower will replace one at nearby Patrick Air Force Base. The site will be used by NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the 45th Space Wing and their customers. The tower will be able to monitor weather conditions directly above the launch pads at Kennedy. The weather radar is essential in issuing lightning and other severe weather warnings and vital in evaluating lightning launch commit criteria. The new radar, replacing what was installed 25 years ago, includes Doppler capability to detect winds and identify the type, size and number of precipitation particles. The site is ideally distant from the launch pads and has unobstructed views of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank is outfitted with approximately 89 strain gauges, thermocouples and wiring in preparation for a tanking test no earlier than Dec. 17 on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During the test, engineers will monitor what happens to 21-foot long, U-shaped aluminum brackets, called stringers, located at the external tank's intertank area, as well as the newly replaced ground umbilical carrier plate (GUCP), during the loading of cryogenic propellants. Discovery's first launch attempt for STS-133 was scrubbed in early November due to a hydrogen gas leak at GUCP. The next launch opportunity is no earlier than Feb. 3, 2011.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Technicians inspect a spent shuttle solid rocket booster outside Hangar AF at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The booster was used during space shuttle Discovery's STS-133 launch from NASA Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A on Feb. 24. The shuttles two solid rocket booster casings and associated flight hardware were recovered in the Atlantic Ocean by retrieval ships Liberty Star and Freedom Star.The boosters impact the Atlantic about seven minutes after liftoff and the retrieval ships are stationed about 10 miles from the impact area at the time of splashdown. After the spent segments are processed, they will be transported to Utah, where they will be refurbished and stored, if needed.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians prepare to work inside the intertank of space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank. Seen here are step pads that will be temporarily installed in the intertank. The intertank is unpressurized and holds most of the tank's electrical components. It sits between the liquid hydrogen tank and liquid oxygen tank. Technicians will be working inside the intertank to further analyze two cracks that were found on the tanks metal exterior. The foam cracked during initial loading operations for space shuttle Discoverys launch attempt on Nov. 5. The cracks are on one of the stringers, which are the composite aluminum ribs located vertically on the intertank area. Discovery's next launch attempt is no earlier than Nov. 30 at 4:02 a.m. EST.

Crawler-transporter 2 (CT-2) is underneath the mobile launcher May 31, 2018, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Three lifts were performed to practice lifting procedures, validate interface locations, confirm the weight of the mobile launcher, and develop a baseline for modal analysis. The mobile launcher is equipped with a number of lines, called umbilicals, which will connect to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion. CT-2 has been upgraded to handle the weight of the mobile launcher with SLS and Orion atop. Exploration Ground Systems is preparing the ground systems necessary to support the SLS and Orion spacecraft for Exploration Mission-1 and deep space missions.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Construction workers attach a crane to part of the launch pad for the Project Morpheus prototype lander at the north end of the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch pad will be moved to a different location at the landing facility to support the next phase of flight testing. The seventh free flight test of Morpheus occurred on March 11. The 83-second test began at 3:41 p.m. EDT with the Morpheus lander launching from the ground over a flame trench and ascending to 580 feet. Morpheus then flew its fastest downrange trek at 30 mph, travelling farther than before, 837 feet. The lander performed a 42-foot divert to emulate a hazard avoidance maneuver before descending and touching down on Landing Site 2, at the northern landing pad inside the automated landing and hazard avoidance technology ALHAT hazard field. Operations and maintenance crewmembers at John Day Dam, located on the Columbia River near Rufus, Oregon, look down into the dams navigation lock July 26 as engineers inspect the locks upstream gate, which malfunctioned July 25 due to a broken guide wheel. While the Corps works to fix the 215,000-pound vertical lift gate, its continuing to pass vessels through the lock using a floating bulkheada wall that can be moved in and out of place with a tugboat and essentially used as a temporary gate. Currently, vessel lockages, which typically take about 45 minutes, are taking twice as long. The guide wheels, two of which are attached to each side of the gate, act as rollers that keep the gate aligned as it moves up and down through its normal range of motion during lockages.
