On July 15, Deputy Commanding General Heitkamp visited the Pittsburgh District to tour the construction work at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon, PA. The construction work is part of the Lower Monongahela River project, which will replace the nearly 100-year-old fixed-crest dam with a gated dam at Braddock Locks and Dam 2, remove Locks and Dam 3 in Elizabeth and construct two larger locks at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon. The Braddock, Elizabeth and Charleroi locks are the three oldest operating-navigation facilities on the Monongahela River and experience the highest commercial-traffic volume in the entire Monongahela River Navigation System.

Rock Water Drilling company uses a geoprobe machine to collect soil borings as part of a remedial investigation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the 167th Airlift Wing, Shepherd Field, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Nov. 15, 2022. The borings are classified by geologists and samples are collected for further lab testing. The remedial investigation is part of a long-term study to determine the extent of PFAS in the ground at the base. A construction crew works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District to complete a concrete pier repair project for the Loyalhanna Lake dams service bridge in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, Aug. 31, 2022. The concrete work is just one of the dozens of construction projects the Pittsburgh District manages at any given time throughout the region.

Paul Sadowski, a USACE Hurricane Ian infrastructure team member and Mobile District employee, conducts an Applied Technology Council - 45, or ATC-45, Rapid Evaluation Safety Assessment on Fort Myers Beach, Florida, Oct. 19. USACE received a FEMA mission assignment to conduct the ATC-45 assessments and USACE inspectors are working in coordination with county and state of Florida officials to conduct the structure assessments and then forwarding their findings to local county officials for a final decision. ATC-45 is an industry standard safety evaluation after windstorms and floods. In addition to the ATC-45 assessments, USACE is actively supporting FEMA and the state of Florida Hurricane Ian recovery efforts in other areas to include temporary blue roof installations, temporary housing and debris technical assistance.

USACE Omaha District engineers conduct a periodic inspection, May 6th, 2022, of the conduit pipe that goes through the Salt Creek 8 Dam dam in Lincoln, NE. When opened, the conduit pipe is one way water flows from the reservoir to Salt Creek. The Omaha District manages the safety program for 28 USACE-owned dam and reservoir projects and eight secondary, or ancillary, structures.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sep. 26, 2022) Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1, pour concrete for a new Entry Control Point (ECP) onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola. The new ECP will help alleviate traffic entering the base. NMCB 1 is conducting an intense homeport training plan to expand their ability to execute construction, humanitarian assistance, and theater operations.

Workers prepare to unload the second half of the A-level work platforms, A north, for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, from a heavy load transport truck near the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This is the final platform delivered to Kennedy. The platform will be offloaded in a staging area near the VAB. The A-level platforms are the topmost platforms for High Bay 3 in the VAB. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is overseeing upgrades and modifications to High Bay 3 to support processing of the SLS and Orion spacecraft. A total of 10 levels of new platforms, 20 platform halves altogether, will surround the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft and provide access for testing and processing.
