Sketchbook John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Sketchbook, 1871-1872. Graphite, charcoal, watercolor and white chalk on paper, Sketchbook: 9 3/16 x 11 7/8 x 1/2 in. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. The sketches show a variety of approaches, from broad, linear strokes to refined tonal modeling. American Art 1871-1872

Larry Rivers paints a billboard for the first New York Film Festival in Manhattan's Lincoln Square, 1963. Rivers, born Yitzrok Loiza Grossberg, began as a jazz saxophonist and was a contemporary and friend of Miles Davis. As a painter, he produced pop art that bordered on the abstract and became one of America's most important postwar artists. Born 1923, died 2002.

When creating this ensemble of four panel paintings, Elizabeth Boott Duveneck looked to the dramatically cropped, asymmetrical compositions of Japanese art. In 1853 trade was reestablished between the Western world and Japan for the first time in more than two hundred years. Staff Sgt. Ebony Adams, 65th Airlift Squadron flight attendant, original painting entitled, hair and my creative juices, was created in celebration of Black History Month at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Jan. 18, 2024. Adams painting displayed a male sporting an afro with different art forms that have significance within the black community, which includes drawing, painting, music and dance. She also shared her love for earth tone colors and described the choice of color for the subject's skin to be an organ color, showcasing the essence and beauty of the black community.
