The Crucifixion. For his depiction of Golgotha, the mountain on which Christ was crucified, the artist chose a high viewpoint. In doing so, he created a vast landscape in which to represent successive episodes of the Passion of Christ simultaneously. This narrative convention was often used in medieval painting.

The Crucified Christ between the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist ca. 1406 Lorenzo Monaco (Piero di Giovanni) Italian Lorenzo Monaco, the leading painter in Florence during the early fifteenth century, was equally gifted as an illuminator of books, a painter of frescoes, altarpieces and devotional paintings. This panel likely formed the central pinnacle of a multi-tiered altarpiece, perhaps that portraying the Madonna and Child with Saints Domninus, John the Baptist, Peter, and Anthony Abbot (Museo Diocesano, Empoli). In depicting the Crucifixion, the artist has excluded the numerous figures traditionally incorporated into the narrative, such as the crowds of soldiers, the mourning Holy Women, and the Thieves, thereby reducing the composition to include only the Virgin and Saint John. Contemplating Christs sacrifice, they are portrayed seated on the ground, for compositional or dramatic effect. Their relatively large size compared to the figure of Christ may relate to their roles

Triptych with the Lamentation of Christ. The central panel of this triptych is painted to look like a Gothic portal with six small scenes of the Childhood and Passion of Christ. Together with the mourning of the dead body of Christ in the middle, they form the so-called Seven Sorrows of the Virgin. The altarpiece came from the Mariënpoel Convent outside of Leiden. The triptych could be removed to safety before the monastery was destroyed in a second Iconoclastic Fury in 1572.

The Crucifixion with Donors and Saints Peter and Margaret. Artist: Cornelis Engebrechtsz (Netherlandish, ca. 1461-1527). Dimensions: 24 1/4 x 35 1/4 in. (61.5 x 89.5 cm). Date: ca. 1525-27.Engebrechtsz was the leading painter in Leiden in the early sixteenth century. In this strikingly symmetrical Crucifixion, piety and dramatic energy are combined, and emotional effect is pushed to an extreme. The figure of Christ is isolated against the darkened sky; his tormented, lifeless body is flanked on either side by the crucified thieves, whose forms are contorted in agony. While the mourning Virgin echoes the posture of her son, indicating her empathic suffering, Saint John gazes up in grief at Christ. The two unidentified donors, probably husband and wife, are physically close to but psychologically detached from the scene. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Cornelis Engebrechtsz.

The Trinity ca. 1390-96 Agnolo Gaddi Italian This imposing representation of the Trinity (God the Father, his son Jesus on the cross, and the dove of the Holy Spirit) was painted about 1390 and is probably the center of a triptych. Among the leading painters in late-fourteenth-century Florence, Agnolos work, with its pastel colors and delicate modeling, was especially important for Lorenzo Monaco, whose four prophets hang nearby..
