Medallion 13th century (before 1227) French These medallions probably come from a large traveling chest that belonged to Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. A collector and bibliophile, he purchased several such coffrets in Limoges and took them to his residence near Turin. Later the medallions were used as decorative elements on the choirstalls of the Church of Saint Sebastian in Biella, a dependency of one of the cardinals foundations. She is seated a throne, where a weapon trophy serves as a seat and immediately below the inscription Pax. Peace on the throne is placed under a canopy, which is stopped by two Caratide-like figures, the lower body of which flows into foliage. There is a bird on both sides of peace, with two putti underneath. The left blows on a trumpet, the right wears a lance and shield. The whole is surrounded by a profiled frame, which has been restored on the left. At the top, two rings are sounded, to which a chain is attached so that the plate can hang.
