Fan 209929Parasol. Culture: French. Date: 1855-65.The coral handle, seen here, with its matching rib tips is fairly rare and so delicate that it speaks of the highly decorative and ephemeral quality of parasols of this period. The ultimate fragility of the handle is in the little spurs that protrude from the main shank making them highly vulnerable to breakage. This would have been a very expensive model and made a statement about the wearer's social economic standing. As a marquise parasol, it would have been used more for flirtation purposes than actual shading from the sun. Japanese beach parasol made of bamboo with deck of symathy silk tulle, painted with multicolored flowers, bud of marbled wood and metal point, on which 'Made in Japan'. Model: Bamboo ribs with bamboo interior, thin rope and wood. The deck, from one whole, is clamped between the ribs, which are first cut open for this and then stuck close again. As a result, the ribs can also be seen on the outside and the closed parasol seems to have a deck of bamboo. These ribs are clamped in an interior of thin sticks that are incised at the top. The thick ribs and thin sticks are fixed by a white rope drawn by a hole in both ribs. At the bottom, the inside is resting that is furthermore provided with a variety of thin cord, on a thick, painted slider that must be moved over a metal spring to tension the deck. The long wooden button is relieved on the stick with a metal nail. The button is divided into three parts with two red tires, which are marbled in different ways. Fox & Company American Parasols, such as the one featured; with black satin canopies overlaid with black lace are quintessential examples of the 1880s. This particular parasol is of very high quality. The G. Fox Company patented its Paragon ribs in 1852 and the key feature of the ribs were their U-shape (rather than a tubular form) which allowed the mechanism to close much more closely to the shank, and this construction overtook all other types of mechanisms after that point. The handle on this parasol is beautifully carved with a vaguely Asian aesthetic. The swirls are reminiscent of swirling streams of Japanese art..
