Float porcelainCovered bowl and stand ca. 1765 Le Nove Porcelain Manufactory That the Metropolitan Museum's holdings of eighteenth-century Italian porcelain are noted for both their quality and their depth makes the acquisition of this covered bowl and stand particularly appropriate. They were made at the factory of Nove, near Bassano in the north of Italy. A ceramic factory that produced faience (tin-glazed earthenware) was established in Nove in 1727, and porcelain was first manufactured there in about 1762. On stylistic grounds this covered bowl and stand appear to date from the early years of porcelain production at Nove, yet the decoration, both painted and molded, is remarkably sophisticated. The scrolling leaf and floral motifs executed in low relief reflect a thorough understanding of Rococo designs, as do the scrolling asymmetrical handles and the finial on the cover. Many of the painted reserves, however, include classical settings and motifs that indicate the growing influence of NeoclassiPlate - small bowl. unknown, craftsmanAnonymous. Plate "W the law". The shapes and the decoration were commissioned from the architect Louis le Masson who was instructed that the service should represent "the most rigorous antique taste." The need for new forms and decorative schemes for the service delayed its production, and it remained incomplete at the outbreak of the Revolution. Less than twenty pieces from the service Arabesque are known today.. Plate (assiette octogone or assiette platte) from the "Service Arabesque". French, Sévres. ca. 1783-85. Soft-paste porcelain. Date: 1885.Union Porcelain Works was one of the most important and inventive American porcelain manufacturers in the second-half of the nineteenth century. In addition to their imaginative works designed by the German-born artistic director, Karl H. L. Müller, the firm's mainstay was the production of heavy porcelain hotel dinnerware. This extensive service was made by Thomas Carll Smith, head of the Union Porcelain Works, as a gift to his daughter, Pastora Forest Smith Chace. The neoclassical decoration of the gilt bellflower and basket motif is complimented by turquoise enamel. Unlike the firm's more eccentric and lavish designs created for their display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, the pottery favored a more restrained classical style for their dinner services. This service descended in the Chace family. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art,Stand ca. 1772-74 Meissen Manufactory German. Most of these early painted creatures had little delineation and their coloring was entirely arbitrary. It was not until the late 1760s that the painters at Sèvres began depicting birds that were accurate representations of those found in nature, rendered with specificity and accurate coloration. The impetus for this change was the availability of hand-colored etchings of birds published in George Edwardss (British, 1694-1773) A Natural History of Birds (1743-51) and his Gleanings of Natural History, issued in a series of volumes between 1747 and 1764.[1 The first pieces of Sèvres porcelain decorated with birds copied from Edwardss prints were produced for Charles Lennox (173Plate.
