Charles VII of France (1403-1461) did not immediately succeed his father, remaining the dauphin and ruling over what parts of France remained to him. In 1429, Joan of Arc (pictured here at right) encouraged him to fight for his rights and then had him crowned king at Rheims (pictured here) on July 17, 1429. This tapestry was completed around 1640 and hung in the Chateau d'Espanel.

The Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist ca. 1514-15 Bernard van Orley This panel once formed the right wing of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the left wing of which is nearby. Recounted in biblical texts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, this pendant shows the martyrdom of the saint. John had been thrown into prison by King Herod for preaching against the latters decision to marry his brothers wife, Herodias. Scheming with her mother to get rid of John, Salome danced seductively before Herod, thereafter demanding the head of John the Baptist as a reward. Orestes and Pylades (left) were caught trying to steal a statue of Diana from the temple (left background). One of them will have to die. At the altar, the friends argue over who will give his life for the other. Lastmans densely composed compositions, his bright colours and the expressive gestures of his figures - all had an impact on the young Rembrandt.
