Jean-Léon Gérôme traveled frequently through Egypt and the Ottoman Empire from 1853 onward, collecting photographs, textiles, and other props to use in his Paris studio. Although his detailed rendering of two carpets lends this painting a documentary appearance, Gérômes stereotypical portrayal of an Egyptian carpet vendor and brightly costumed passersby reveals his desire to appeal to European fantasies of the Arab-Islamic world. In France, such imagined scenes were interpreted as faithful records of an unchanging “Orient,” helping to justify and obscure the harrowing transformations enacted by European imperialism within North Africa and the Middle East. A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.

Date: ca. 1867-68.Vedder is best known for his visionary paintings that contain classical and allegorical allusions, which were precursors to the Symbolist movement in the United States. This series of paintings, however, has a literary theme based on a specific text--Aesop's fable "The Miller, His Son, and the Donkey". Vedder used his beloved Italy as the setting of the classic fable, in which a hapless miller and his son attempt to appease passing critics, resulting in the death of their precious donkey. In the biblical narrative, Mary and Joseph live in Nazareth but must journey to Bethlehem, the ancestral home of Josephs family, to be counted in a census imposed by the Romans. On their arrival in the town, Joseph searches for lodgings without success. Tissot contrasts Josephs anxious plea—calling up to townspeople in hopes of finding accommodation—with the Virgin Marys quiet resignation. Tissots expeditions to the Middle East in the 1880s provided rich source material for his watercolor compositions. The thick masonry walls and labyrinthine alleys of Jaffa, an ancient port city near modern Tel Aviv in Israel, serve here, with minor revisions, as the backdrop of Bethlehem. E

This illustration from a 1910 edition of The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott has the following caption: Ellen with arms open and old man with a harp. Sir Walter Scotts The Lady of the Lake was published by Richard Scott of New York in 1813. The six-canto poem tells the story of King James Vs struggle against James Douglas, and the affections of three suitors towards James Douglas daughter, Ellen. Rudolf Swoboda the younger (1859-1914) was a 19th-century Austrian painter, born in Vienna. He studied under Leopold Carl Muller, and voyaged with him to Egypt in 1880. He was a well-known Orientalist. In 1886, Queen Victoria commissioned Swoboda to paint several of a group of Indian artisans who had been brought to Windsor as part of the Golden Jubilee preparations. Victoria liked the resulting paintings so much that she paid Swoboda's way to India to paint more of her Indian subjects. Swoboda painted many of the ordinary people of India in a grouping of small (no more than eight inches high) paintings which resulted.

In this parable, a young man leaves the comfort of family, wanders foreign lands, and resorts to begging after wasting a fortune through debauchery. Returning, he receives the embrace of his father, who warmly welcomes him home despite his mistakes, prompting the young man to repent the rejection of his family. Tissot had treated the Prodigal Son subject several times before, first in the guise of early historicizing scenes that helped establish his career and then, in the early 1880s, as a series of paintings and later etchings set in Victorian England.
