The shading and highlighting in the coloration of the clothes were techniques probably inspired by Western engravings. Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.

Soon after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, a group of London merchants presented a petition to Queen Elizabeth I for permission to sail to the Indian Ocean. Despite early sailing disasters, the East India Company was formed in 1600. It became the British East India Company after the Treaty of Union in 1707. It was a joint-stock company that was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China, mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, saltpetre, tea, and opium. The Company long held a privileged position within the British government, and was frequently granted special rights and privileges, including trade monopolies and exemptions, which caused much resentment among its competitors. The Company remained a powerful force until it was dissolved in 1874.
