Study for Angels Sealing the Foreheads of the Children of Israel in Saint Peter's Basilica 1652 Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini) Italian Composed of three joined sheets, this magisterial design represents a vision of the Apocalypse, with the division of risen souls on the Day of Judgment. It is a study for the mosaic decoration of a dome in the right nave of Saint Peter's basilica. (The oval lantern piercing the dome is lightly indicated at the center.) Work on this important commission began in 1668, the year before Cortona's death, and was overseen by his talented pupil Ciro Ferri (1634-1689).In 1652 Cortona was at work on cartoons for the mosaic decoration of the first three bays in the right nave of Saint Peter's Basilica. For the elliptical cupolas of these bays lie supplied scenes from the Apocalypse - the mosaic of the third cupola representing the Incensing of the Fiery Altar, that of the second the Adoration of the Lamb. Susanna and the Elders (recto); Architectural design and other scribbles (verso) ca. 1720 Giovanni Battista Pittoni Italian This small, energetic composition sketch in black chalk portrays the apocryphal Old Testament story of Susannah, here seen in voluptuous nudity on the right, being surprised at her bath by the two lecherous elders, whose figures are summarily indicated. The artist first rapidly and lightly sketched the overall composition, and then boldly reworked the outlines of the male figures with much greater pressure of the hand for tonal emphasis. Representing Pittoni's typical Rococo sensibility, the composition sketch appears to have been intended for a finished painting or print, and seems to be closely related to that of a sketch in the Museo Civico Correr, Venice (inv. 4338) and in the Fondazione Cini, Venice (inv. 30.252.) Several compositions of Susannah and the Elders by Pittoni are extant, although none representing a finished monumental painting has been identifie

Study for a Ceiling Decoration: Coronation of the Virgin (recto); Female Head (verso) 1680 attributed to Giacinto Brandi Crowded scenes with the apotheosis of saints were a popular subject for ceiling decorations in Roman churches of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The outlines of an architectural ceiling surrounding this powerful large-scale composition drawing, or modello,’ reveal that this design was intended for such a fresco painting. At top, the Virgin Mary is crowned by the Holy Trinity, consisting of God the Father, his Son, and the Holy Spirit represented by a dove. A large number of agitated saints and angels in adoration witness the scene from different tiers of clouds. Until now, the author of this drawing was unknown. The identification of the artist as Giacinto Brandi, a Roman pupil of Alessandro Algardi, was proposed in 2014 by Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò and Ursula Verena Fischer Pace (see bibliography).
