Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody aircraft mark II in flight during the Michelin Trophy trials. In the background on the ground the observation stand and marker flags can be seen along with a herd of cows. Cody built this aircraft in 1910; the previous aircraft had been in several crashes and was suffering generally from constant usage. The design of this aircraft followed similar lines to the previous one though the wingspan was shorter by around six feet and the wing area around a third smaller. The single propeller was originally intended to be powered by two 60 hp Green engines (mark IIA) though problems with synchronicity meant that this was never carried out. This did mean that the aircraft was underpowered though alterations to the engine and the removal of excess weight partly solved this problem (marks IIB to IID). When this engine was replaced with a 120 hp Austro-Daimler, the aircraft performed well, and in January 1912 carried Cody and four passengers. It

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A good view of Cody aircraft mark V outside the shed on Laffan's Plain. The shed door is open revealing a women stood at front, a wing hung on the side of the shed, some work benches and two posters one a cartoon of Cody from the magazine Vanity Fair, the other appears to be some form of advert for the 'Cody Flyer'. A women is stood at the entrance to the shed. Note the horse shoe above the entrance to the shed. Cody was a superstitious person, for instance he would never fly on a Sunday or start projects on a Friday, he avoided the use of the number thirteen, had a black cat as a mascot and most importantly of all avoided anything green on his aircraft, either being worn by a passenger or on the aircraft itself. Rumours suggest that this superstition may have been well founded, supposedly after one crash he found that the newly installed seat had a green label and according to some accounts his passenger in the fatal accident was wearing

Walruses To Pot Whiles -- One of the Walrus seaplanes in flight. Three ***** Walrus seaplanes are to take part as spotters during the whaling season beginning in September in the Antarctic. It is the biggest whale-hunt in history, and the Walruses were launched to-day at the Saunders Roe Works at Cowes, ***** of Wight. The expedition consists of a big factory ship and 11 or 12 catchers, and radio, asdic apparatus and Automatic harpoon guns will be used in the hunt. The three Walruses will search the Antarctic seas for the pink tinge on the water which indicates the presence of the shrimps on which the whales feed. July 20, 1946.

On December 17 1903 at 10:30 am at Kitty Hawk North Carolina this airplane arose for a few seconds to make the first powered heavier-than-air controlled flight in history. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and flew a distance of 120 feet. Orville Wright piloted the historic flight while his brother Wilbur observed. The brothers took three other flights that day each flight lasting longer than the other with the final flight going a distance of 852 feet in 59 seconds. This flight was the

This is a three-quarter front view of a Thomas Morse S-4C type airplane, used for advanced training by the United States Government during World War One. It has a wing spread of 26ft 6in and an overall length of 19ft 10in. With a Gnome Monosoupape 100 H.P. engine, it can reach a high speed of 105 M.P.H. and climb to 9500 ft in 10 minutes. With an 80 H.P. Le Rhone engine and Marlin machine gun, it has a high speed of 97 M.P.H. and can climb to 7500 ft in 10 minutes.

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War- the work of Samuel Franklin Cody in Airship, Kite and Aircraft Aeronautics 1903 - 1913 Cody Aircraft Mark IC (nicknamed Cathedral) in flight over Laffan's Plain near Aldershot with S F Cody at the controls. The total lack of protection around the pilot is clearly visible. It was in this aircraft that Cody made the first passenger carrying flight in Britain (with Colonel J E Capper on the 14th August 1909) as well as several other record breaking flights. On 8 September 1909, Cody made a cross-country flight of around forty miles, the furthest ever at the time, passing over Aldershot, Camberley, Fleet, Farnham and Farnborough.

"Image showcasing two types of observation airplanes used during World War One - the Salmson 2A2 and the Caudron 11A3, both of French origin. The Salmson 2A2 had a wing spread of 38 ft. 6 in., a motor of 270 HP, and had a climb time of 7 min. 15 sec. to reach 6,500 ft. The Caudron 11A3 had a wing spread of 58 ft. 9 in., two Hispano 215 HP motors, and had a climb time of 8 min. 10 sec. to reach 6,500 ft."

The image shows the first American-built Caproni airplane, the Liberty Caproni C.A.5 bombing machine. It was constructed at the plant of the Standard Aircraft Corp. in Mineola, Long Island. Captain Hoseph D'Annunzio, son of the Italian poet and aviator Gabriel D'Annunzio, conducted the test flight with Giuliano Carvese as the pilot at the Hagelhurst Aviation Field. Aviation in Britain Before the First World War- the work of Samuel Franklin Cody in Airship, Kite and Aircraft Aeronautics 1903 - 1913 Army demonstration of the Cody Aircraft Mark VIA's potential to serve as an ambulance plane, probably on Laffan's Plain near Aldershot. In the foreground, the aircraft's first aid outfit is laid out on top of its case. Next to it is the stretcher being held S F Cody's assistants, which include seventy year old Mr Wackett, whilst a soldier plays the part of the casualty. The Mark VI was both the last and the largest of Cody's aircraft. It was intended as an entrant in the Daily Mail Coastal Circuit of Britain competion of August 1913. During the Competition, aircraft were to fly from Calshot near Southampton to Inverness, across the Irish Sea to Dublin, round Land's End to Falmouth before returning to Southampton within 72 hours. Despite the aircraft's size, it handled well and the 100 hp Green engine meant it was relatively fast. Cody was confident that

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A good view of Cody aircraft mark V, on the ground with Cody who is stood by the wing facing the camera and some other mechanics one of whom is on high stool carrying out some work on the rigging of the elevator. With the help of his family and friends Cody built the mark V mainly from the remains of the mark III in just four weeks, after both the aircraft that he intended to enter in the trials were written off. It was powered by the 120 hp Austro-Daimler engine which was relatively unscathed from the crashes it had been in. Note the triangular rudders similar to those on the monoplane. It was with this machine that Cody won both the International Division and the British Division (£5000 prize in total) of the 1912 military trials, a competition to find an aircraft for the army. 32 machines were entered from 21 companies in a series of tests.
