Reportage at the Polytechnic school in Lausanne (Switzerland), in the integrated systems lab. The lab is developing an implantable system allowing human metabolism to be monitored. The implant has 5 biosensors, which measure the density of various molecules, a temperature sensor and a PH sensor. It transmits real time data via Bluetooth. Researchers can select the molecules they wish to detect on each separate biosensor (eg. Glucose or cholesterol). The implant is positioned according to the pathology to be monitored. Researchers have built a larger version of the implant in order to test all its components.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Technicians in the Life Science Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center work on the FASTRACK Space Experiment Platform. The rack is designed to support two standard lockers that fit inside the space shuttle's crew middeck. It is being developed jointly by Kennedy and Space Florida to facilitate NASA and commercial use of reusable U.S. suborbital flight vehicles currently under development. FASTRACK will enable investigators to test experiments, apparatus and analytical techniques in hardware compatible with the International Space Station, and to perform science that can be carried out during the reduced gravity available for brief periods during aircraft parabolas. Flight testing of the FASTRACK will be performed on four consecutive days between September 9-12 from Ellington Field near NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston.

A team from each school built a satellite and the two will work together inside a small rocket to measure vibration and other data during launch. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- During Crew Equipment Interface Test activities at SPACEHAB, Cape Canaveral, Fla., STS-107 Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla trains on a glove box experiment. As a research mission, STS-107 will carry the SPACEHAB Double Module in its first research flight into space and a broad collection of experiments ranging from material science to life science. CEIT activities enable the crew to perform certain flight operations, operate experiments in a flight-like environment, evaluate stowage locations and obtain additional exposure to specific experiment operations. Other STS-107 crew members are Commander Rick Douglas Husband; Pilot William C. McCool; Payload Commander Michael P. Anderson; Mission Specialists Laurel Blair Salton Clark and David M. The HRF-2 will deliver additional biomedical instrumentation and research capability to the International Space Station. HRF Rack 1 contains an ultrasound unit and gas analyzer system and has been operational in the U.S. Lab since May 2001. HRF-2 will also be installed in the U. S. Lab and will provide structural, power, thermal, command and data handling, and communication and tracking interfaces between the HRF biomedical instrumentation and the U. S. Lab.

TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. - Two employees' suggestion will save the depot over $78,000 per year.Vincent Nguyen and William Bishop have developed a test aid that saves time and money. Nguyen is an electronics measurement equipment mechanic in the Command, Control and Computer Systems Division's Test Equipment Support Branch and Bishop is an electronics mechanic in the Avionics Division's Flight Control Systems Branch. Both are part of the Command, Control and Computer Systems (C3)/Avionics Directorate.The test aid is used to troubleshoot the A1A1 circuit card, which is part of a circuit card assembly (CCA). The CCA is a component of the AN/ARC-186, a small, lightweight radio used in the Black Hawk helicopter. "You can't purchase these boards, so we have to repair them if we can," Bishop says.Prior to the test aid, the employees in the branch would perform a "guess and check" method, says Bishop. "There was no way we could energize the CCA to tell if the parts were bad."The mecha

The test wiring has been spliced into an electrical harness in the aft main engine compartment connected with the engine cut-off, or ECO, sensor system. The attached wiring leads to the interior of the mobile launcher platform where the time domain reflectometry, or TDR, test equipment is located.
