Owned by renowned art collector and fashion enthusiast Muriel Kallis Newman, the collection represents her knowledge and appreciation of a wide range of jewelry design and making traditions. Numerous items in her collection are composite artifacts made from various cultures and time periods reappropriated as modern jewelry creations by or for Muriel. It is important to note that Newman wore many of the pieces in the collection, interpreting them to suit and express her own singular, often avant-garde style.. Necklace 141760Two marble pilasters. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: Overall: 108 x 12 x 13 in. (274.3 x 30.5 x 33 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 117-138.Decorated on three sides with ivy vines in low relief, these twin pillars exemplify the lavish use of colored marble and elaborate carving in Roman architecture. Branches of young ivy and clusters of berries issue from the central stalk that rises vertically from an ornate calyx krater at the base. Birds, insects, and reptiles inhabit the trailing lush foliage, all carved in a vivid, naturalistic manner that evokes a garden in springtime. The pillars are made of cipollino verde (also known as marmor carystium), a precious striated greenish marble desired for its polychromy. Exotic colored marbles conveyed elevated status and were reserved for imperial and prestigious public buildings. The high-quality craftsmanship of the relief also suggests an imperial commission. The pillars probably come from emperor Hadrian's villa at Tivoli, outside Rome, where similar pillDisposable tea bag with paper label on a string Disposable tea bag with paper label on a string on isolated background Copyright: xZoonar.com/DANKOxNx 21638253Old obsolete dirty postcard isolated on white Old obsolete dirty postcard isolated on white Copyright: xZoonar.com/AlexanderxKarasevx 1267967Kobako 17th century Japan.
