ISS007-E-17038 (11 October 2003) --- This view featuring a close-up of the Salton Sea was taken by an Expedition 7 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The image provides detail of the structure of the algal bloom. These blooms continue to be a problem for the Salton Sea. They are caused by high concentrations of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorous, which drain into the basin from the agricultural run-off. As the algae die and decompose, oxygen levels in the sea drop, causing fish kills and hazardous condition for other wildlife.

The Vistula River is a major river in Poland that originates in the western part of the Carpathian Mountains (specifically the western slopes of the mountain Barania Gora) in southern Poland. The river winds its way northward for 1,047 kilometers, through major cities such as Krakow and Warsaw, to Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea. Several towns have been completely or partially inundated including Gorzyce, Sokolniki and Trzesn in addition to large numbers of agricultural fields (normally green as visible at top and bottom right). While the flooding illustrated here is extensive, it represents but a small snapshot” of conditions that have developed in Eastern Europe over the past two weeks. This image captures about 15 kilometers of the important infrastructure corridor just west of Yuma, AZ. The prominent dark line crossing the image is the Canal which is crossed, in this view, by Interstate Highway 8. The canal carries 740.6 cubic meters (26,155 cubic feet) of water per second from the Colorado River westward to support the intensive agriculture of Californias Imperial Valley to the northwest, and to nine cities including San Diego, CA. The canal system is the Imperial Valleys only source of water, and allows irrigation of more than 2,000 square kilometers (500,000 acres) of agricultural fields. Northern Saudi Arabia hosts some of the most extensive sand and gravel deserts in the world, but modern agricultural technology has changed the face of some of them. This photograph presents the almost surreal image of abundant green fields in the midst of a barren desert specifically the Wadi As-Sirhan Basin of northwestern Saudi Arabia. As recently as 1986 there was little to no agricultural activity in the area, but over the subsequent 26 years agricultural fields have been steadily developed, largely as a result of investment of oil industry revenues by the Saudi government. The fields use water pumped from subsurface aquifers and is distributed in rotation about a center point within a circular field a technique known as center-pivot agriculture.
