The Burden Kahlil Gibran (American, born Lebanon, 1883-1931). The Burden, 1919. Watercolor and graphite on medium cream wove paper with watermarks, Sheet: 11 1/16 x 8 9/16 in. (28.1 x 21.7 cm). The unusual and otherworldly subject of a small mother-and-child group held aloft by two large disembodied hands in this drawing typifies the imagery of the artist and writer Kahlil Gibran. Like his fellow Symbolist Elihu Vedder (whose work is displayed nearby), Gibran was preoccupied with the transcendence of the soul and the universal experiences of love, spirituality, and the life cycle. The Burden alludes to themes of maternal responsibility and the role of a divine agent guiding human endeavors. American Art 1919

This large drawing depicts a small plaster cast of a cupid that Paul Cézanne kept in his studio. Although the cast appears in a number of watercolors and drawings, and four of his paintings, this is an independent graphic study and was not meant as a preparatory drawing for a particular work. Cézanne explored the contours of the cupids pudgy form using layered pencil strokes that convey the animation of its dynamic pose. On the other side of the sheet is a study of the kind of drapery that appears in his paintings of the cupid sculpture. European Art ca. 1890

The Embrace. Artist: Auguste Rodin (French, Paris 1840-1917 Meudon). Dimensions: 12 13/16 x 9 7/8 in. (32.5 x 25.1 cm). Date: 1900-1910.When Rodin was pleased with a sketch from life, he copied or traced the composition onto a new sheet, adding washes for skin tone and hair color. He might then rework the drawing further by reinforcing certain areas with graphite and highlighting with watercolor and gouache. In this example, the artist maintains the tenderness of the couple's embrace while creating a sense of vibration and energy through vigorous graphite strokes and yellow and blue watercolor mixed with gouache.
