Mary Cassatt at the Louvre: The Etruscan Gallery 1879-80 Edgar Degas French Among the most technically complex of Degas' prints, this view of Mary Cassatt and her sister in the galleries of the Musée du Louvre was intended, like Pissarro's Wooded Landscape at L'Hermitage, Pontoise (21.46.1), to appear in the first issue of the prospective journal Le Jour et la Nuit, on which the two artists collaborated with Cassatt and Félix Bracquemond. The group was intent on achieving new tonal effects in their prints by innovatively working up the surfaces of etching plates, perhaps spurred by achievements in Impressionist paintings or by advances in photography.. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Harrison British Harrison's wood engraving reproduces a work that the Irish painter Fisher exhibited at the British Institution, London in 1848 (no.312) and shows a young white woman in harem dress seated despondently on a divan in a Turkish interior. A dark skinned female, nude to the waist, kneels and offers her refreshment. Unlike exoticized renderings of harems by artists such as Ingres, this image suggests the sad reality experienced by young women captured by the Turks and forced into sexual slavery.. In 1799 Francisco de Goya y Lucientes announced the publication of The Caprichos, eighty etchings and aquatints whose satiric, imaginary subjects offered scathing critiques of the characters, institutions, and values of early modern Spanish society. The prints are among the most influential images in European art. They also demonstrate Goyas mastery of the aquatint technique, with which he created the velvety dark tones that amplify the etchings mysterious quality. Each plate has a poetic or aphoristic caption, but the images alone—filled with animals, witches, goblins, and unenlightened people from all levels of society—convey a range of human failings and vices.
