The Burden Kahlil Gibran (American, born Lebanon, 1883-1931). The Burden, 1919. Watercolor and graphite on medium cream wove paper with watermarks, Sheet: 11 1/16 x 8 9/16 in. (28.1 x 21.7 cm). The unusual and otherworldly subject of a small mother-and-child group held aloft by two large disembodied hands in this drawing typifies the imagery of the artist and writer Kahlil Gibran. Like his fellow Symbolist Elihu Vedder (whose work is displayed nearby), Gibran was preoccupied with the transcendence of the soul and the universal experiences of love, spirituality, and the life cycle. The Burden alludes to themes of maternal responsibility and the role of a divine agent guiding human endeavors. American Art 1919

Studies of a Fallen Male Nude for "Hercules and the Horses of Diomedes" 1852 Eugène Delacroix French This drawing attests to an unrealized idea for an 1852 commission: the decoration of the Salon de la Paix in the newly expanded Hôtel de Ville (Paris City Hall). Delacroixs program included eleven lunettes dedicated to episodes from the life of the Greek hero Hercules. Although conceived as a liberating act, Hercules feeding the barbaric king Diomedes to his own flesh-eating horses—the subject partially depicted here—was likely deemed too violent for a room dedicated to peace. The studies of Diomedes reaching backward above his head and Herculess fist clamped around the kings arm convey some of the force of the struggle, even in the absence of Herculess body and the threatening horses.. Recumbent Nude Woman (Femme nue allongée), 19th century, François Rupert Carabin, French, Saverne, Bas-Rhin 1862-Strasbourg 1932, 8 7/8 × 14 1/4 in. (22.5 × 36.2 cm) (sheet), Charcoal, France, 19th century, Rupert Carabin was a master carver who put his talents to use making elaborate Art Nouveau furniture, usually featuring elements carved as female nudes. To build up a repertoire of poses, Carabin made photographic studies of prostitutes. Lots of them. And often in seductive poses. Some 700 are preserved at the Musée dOrsay in Paris. From these photographs, Carabin executed innumerable drawings he used in creating his functional sculptural pieces. Most have minimal shading to accentuate the forms. The figures are usually shown in isolation with little in the way of accessories or context. Origin of the Greek Vase. Artist: Auguste Rodin (French, Paris 1840-1917 Meudon). Dimensions: 19 3/8 x 12 5/8 in. (49.2 x 32.1 cm). Date: 1900-1910.In a 1911 interview, Rodin described his discovery of this pose during a session with a model. He spoke of recognizing in her form "a vase with exquisite curves, the amphora which contains the life of the future within." Rodin was keenly interested in antique vases--he amassed a collection of more than six thousand vases of ancient, medieval, and Asian origin. Date: ca. 1838.This is one of a group of sketches where Wilkie developed compositional ideas for a painting he would show at the Royal Acdemy, London in 1838 (now National Academy of Scotland, Edinburgh). Pen lines suggest movement, and wash is used to indicate shadow as the artist conveys the movements of a young woman dressing for her wedding watched by companions. The figure's nudity and elevated placement echo classical models, even though the subject was one of Scottish genre, and Wilkie's technique indebted to Dutch seventeenth-century masters such as Rembrandt. The metamorphosis of the composition through the accumulation of bold, swirling graphite strokes, layers of watercolor and gouache, and the added title exemplifies the shifting of meaning possible with Rodin's works.
