The Virgin and Child. Artist: Workshop of Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo di Paolo del Fattorino) (Italian, Florence 1473-1517 Florence). Dimensions: 5-5/8 x 4-9/16 in. (14.3 x 11.6 cm). Date: ca. 1515-17.Quickly drawn in black chalk, this study was formerly part of the same sketchbook which likely also included two studies of almost the same size: one for a Holy Family in the Museum's collection (no. 80.3.135; black chalk, 14.3 x 11.6 cm) and the other one for a Madonna and Child with the Infant St. John in The Morgan Library & Museum, New York (inv. IV,8; black chalk, 13.5 x 9.7 cm). Even though the drawings show similarities with Fra' Bartolomeo's shorthand, the three sketchbook sheets should be attributed to a talented member of his workshop, possibly the monk Fra' Paolino da Pistoia (1488-1547), who inherited his master's drawings and cartoons at his death in 1517. Ecstatic Christ. Artist: Hans Baldung (called Hans Baldung Grien) (German, Schwäbisch Gmünd () 1484/85-1545 Strasbourg (Strassburg)). Dimensions: 6 11/16 x 9 7/16 in. (16.9 x 24.0 cm). Date: ca. 1510-11.The subject of this drawing is highly unusual. Christ is represented after the Crucifixion, as the wounds on his hands and feet indicate, but in a moment before his death, his uplifted head and heavenward gaze evidently signifying a spiritual communion with God the Father. No textual source has been identified for this unprecedented subject and it is possible that it was invented by Baldung himself. The formal source of the supine figure of Christ may lie in ancient Roman representations of dying heroes, known to Northern artists through widely circulated drawn copies. The painting of Alexander, which survived the partial destruction of the Residenz during World War II and remains in Munich (Residenz mit Innenhöfen, Gemäldedepot), shows the Macedonian leader with the Gordion Knot. According to a Phrygian legend, an oracle had predicted that he who was able to untangle this impossible knot would conquer Asia. Alexanders solution was to cut it with his sword.
