Studies for a Rest on the Flight into Egypt 1571-1639 Rutilio Manetti Italian In this robust drawing for his painting now in the Gamäldegalerie of Kassel, Germany, Manetti portrayed the Madonna as a humble down-to-earth mother, giving her infant son something to drink. Although he came under the spell of Caravaggio's dramatic realism, Manetti was at first the pupil of Francesco Vanni (1563-1610), whose fantastically delicate, airborne Virgin Mary is seen at right. Listed by Claus Virch in his catalogue of the Baker collection with a tentative attribution to Annibale Carracci, the drawing was recognized by Philip Pouncey in 1965 as Manetti's study for a painting, The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, now in the Gamäldegalerie (repr. Rutilio Manetti 1571-1639, exhibition catalogue, Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, 1978, p. 81). Another study for this subject, in oil paint on paper, is preserved in the Louvre, it comes from the collection of Pierre-Jean Mariette, who recognized it as the work of Man

Jael Slaying Sisera. Artist: Carlo Maratti (Italian, Camerano 1625-1713 Rome). Dimensions: sheet: 8 3/4 x 10 11/16 in. (22.3 x 27.2 cm). Date: 1625-1713.In the later 1670s, Maratti designed a series of mosaics for a space in the left nave of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. It consists of biblical patriarchs, prophets, and heroines in six half-lunettes and four pendentives along with Saint John's vision of the Immaculate Conception in the surmounting cupola. This is a study for the Jael Slaying Sisera mosaic. Sisera, a Canaanite general and enemy of the Israelites, had sought refuge in the tent of Jael after his defeat on the battlefield, mistakenly believing her to be an ally. Plying Sisera with food and drink and inducing him to sleep, Jael hammered a tent peg into his skull, nailing him to the ground. This noble act earned Jael a place among the heroines of ancient Israel. Maratti's drawing shows her holding the tent peg and hammer, poised to perform her grisly yet heroic deed. Muse

Study of Drapery. Artist: Jean-Baptiste Joseph Wicar (French, Lille 1762-1834 Rome). Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 6 9/16 in. (21.6 x 16.7 cm). Date: 1818.Through careful shading, subtle white highlights, and reserved blank areas, Wicar conveys the intricate folds of toga fabric gathered, tucked, and draped around the model. As the squaring of the sheet suggests, this drawing was made in preparation for a painting, specifically for the figure of Augustus who appears at the center of Virgil Reading the Aeneid to Augustus and Livia (1818), commissioned by Count Giovanni Battista Sommariva (1760-1826) for his villa on Lake Como, where it remains today. Wicar spent most of his career in Italy, where he amassed an important collection of drawings by Italian masters including Raphael (1483-1520), whose influence can be discerned in this study.
