WESTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 15, 2022) Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) conduct firefighting training during UNITAS LXIII, Sept. 15, 2022. UNITAS is the worlds longest-running maritime exercise. Hosted this year by Brazil, it brings together multinational forces from Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and the United States conducting operations in and off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The exercise trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating naval and marine forces.

In the fourth episode of Behind the Triad, Fort McCoy Garrison Commander Colonel Stephen Messenger visits the Fort McCoy Fire Department and meets with Assistant Fire Chief Hunter Young to take part in the firefighting Physical Agility Test. The test consists of 10 sequential events that require firefighter to progress along a pre-determined path from event to event in a continuous manner, the test is a timed event and conducted in full firefighter PPE (turn out gear) and SCBA while on air. Last week, the Fort Stewart garrison command teamCol. Manny Ramirez and Steven Hoodvisited the installation fire department for burn training. The garrison commander and deputy garrison commander were suited up in turnout gear, put on breathing apparatus, learned how to use the hose, and entered the burn training facility to fight a fire. After the burn training, both had a deeper appreciation for what the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield Fire Emergency Services firefighters do to keep our installation safe.

The 165th Airlift Wing members hosted a 9/11 Memorial 5K race on September 10, 2022 at Savannah Air National Guard Base, Georgia to honor those lost as we commemorate the 21st year since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The 5k race gave the military, firefighters, and local community an opportunity to demonstrate their respect and memorialize those who were lost during the attacks on September 11, 2001.
