430,000 Chinese Build Air Bases For U.S. Superfortresses That Bombed Japan -- Thousands of Chinese workers, without the aid of modern machines build a huge field for the U.S. B-29 Superfortresses, planes which on June 15, 1944, bombed military targets in Japan. At least 430,000 Chinese constructed B-29 air bases almost entirely by hand, carrying stone and sand in small baskets and carts from river bods, breaking rocks with hammers, laying stones by hand into the foundations of the enormous runways, and rolling down the rock beds with ten-ton rollers pulled by 140 men teams.
