Floral Still Life. Georgius van Os painted his flowers in bright colours, with crisp contours and little attention to light and shade, entirely in keeping with the taste of his time. The uniform grey background also contributes to the still lifes distinct character. The watercolour can be compared to the still lifes Van Os painted on porcelain in the famous factory in Sèvres near Paris.

Banquet Still Life by Adriaen van Utrecht (1599-1651/52) oil on canvas, 1644. The Fleming Adriaen van Utrecht here demonstrated that he could paint virtually anything, from costly tableware to glass, fruit, an enormous lobster on a Chinese plate, a cut-open pasty and much more. Given its striking low vantage point, this large painting was most likely meant to hang above a chimneypiece.

Roses in a Vase Mary Hiester Reid 1891 The Pennsylvania-born Canadian artist, Mary Hiester Reid, is widely celebrated in her adopted country, if less well known in the U.S. Relocating from Reading to Philadelphia for artistic training, she first studied at the School of Design for Women, before taking classes with Thomas Anshutz and his teacher, Thomas Eakins, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. At the Academy, she met Canadian art student George Agnew Reid, whom she married in 1885. Following a four-month honeymoon in Europe, which included studies for Hiester Reid at the Academie Colarossi, the couple moved to Toronto, where they established a joint studio and private teaching practice. They also taught painting during the summers in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, as part of the Onteora Club, a select literary and arts community, established in 1887 by the Aesthetic design pioneer Candace Wheeler and her friend and business partner, Louis Comfort Tiffany. Still Life with Cake. Artist: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825). Dimensions: 10 3/4 x 15 1/4 in. (27.3 x 38.7 cm). Date: 1818.This typical still life by Raphaelle Peale, the son of Charles Willson Peale, may have been the picture exhibited in 1819 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as "Still Life--Wine, Cakes, Grapes, &c." A similar picture dating from the same year is in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Peale's tightly grouped still lifes are often permeated with a delicate melancholy akin to that which characterized the life of the artist; he was an alcoholic who suffered the effects of arsenic and mercury poisoning caused by his work as a taxidermist in his father's museum. His spare, essential style may have been influenced by the Spanish still lifes he studied in Mexico and by the works of Juan Sanchez Cotan, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1818.
