(88.9 x 52.39 cm), Silk, metallic threads; compound weave structure with discontinuous supplementary patterning, France, 17th-18th century, In an effort to prevent French producers from taking over the luxury textile market, Italian weavers, who had dominated the trade in Europe for several centuries, created a bold new style which later historians dubbed Bizarre due to their strange and exotic patterns. During the 1690s, several European weaving centers quickly began producing these popular new patterns, but by 1700 French designers and weavers reached a degree of sophistication which has enabled them to dominate the luxury cloth trade for more than two hundred years.

Sampler Made 1801-1900 United States. From around 1798 through the 1820s, it was fashionable to include a depiction of a particular style of brick building in samplers made in Baltimore. This sampler belongs to a larger group that depicts brick houses with lawns filled with animals and figures, includes silk chenille, and are all considerably large in format. The representation of brick buildings in samplers reflects the construction of more permanent structures associated with prosperity and urban development during the period.. Womans Rights Quilt ca. 1875 Emma Civey Stahl This unique pictorial quilt tells two distinct stories. Three of the circular appliquéd vignettes depict soldiers who fought in the American Civil War, assuredly still a fresh memory when the quilt was made. Three other blocks feature dynamic scenes of social activism in the fight for womens rights. In one vignette, the reformer leaves her husband and child, a “WOMANS RIGHTS” banner slung jauntily over her shoulder. In another she is driving a horse-drawn cart, undoubtedly going to the meeting depicted in a third circle, where she vociferously lectures the cowering audience. The quiltmakers comical take on one of the most serious issues of the late nineteenth century raises the question of her own viewpoint on the subject.. Womans Rights Quilt 21101

Caminese screen painted with Japanese performances, Anonymous, 1676 - 1699 Caminated screen with six panels made of wood, covered on both sides with paper, with paper hinges (two whole and two half). The completely surrounded with slats of black lacquered wood, reinforced with gold -plated copper batter. The front is painted inside a yellow-green frame with a representation of a Japanese interior with tatami mats and an open wall, a garden with fence, peonies and grass, clouds and a moon, executed in gouache and leaf gold over thicker 'dumps' paint, applied with brush.
