Greco-Roman Intaglios. In the course of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the Hellenistic kingdoms were gradually absorbed into the spreading area of Roman domination. With the intaglios of this time it is rarely possible to distinguish between Greek and Roman manufacture or to determine precise dates or origins. Their wide range of styles and subjects demonstrates the eclecticism of the ages: while some seem deliberately archaising or classic, others appear to allude to contemporary events.

Vintage photograph. Gypsum Flower in Mammoth Cave. Delicate gypsum in pastel colors adorn many of the Cave chambers. There have been two explanations advanced on the origin of these rock flowers of calcium sulphate. They could have been formed by crystallization of salts carried in ground water as it contacted the atmosphere of the cave, or the growths may have been caused by pressure. The constituent elements of gypsum are products of chemical changes within rocks, and it was figured that pressure of overlying rocks may have squeezed the gypsum out onto the walls, ceilings, and floors. Gypsum exists in many forms in Mammoth Cave.

Small pyrite ammonites in Aptian grey marls. The gray marls around Apt were proposed by Alcide d'Orbigny as a reference for the Aptian stage, for their rich paleontological content. Some thirty different species of ammonites have been recorded in the Tuiliere sections, and belemnite rostrums are abundant in certain levels, as are gastropods and lamellibranchs (oysters and plicatula). These marls also yield corals, sea urchins, brachiopods and shark teeth. The Aptian is the penultimate stratigraphic stage of the Lower Cretaceous. It extends from -121.4 to -113.0 Ma, succeeding the Barremian and preceding the Albian (Secondary or Mesozoic Era). France
