Unlike his wartime images for Harper's Weekly, the artist felt free to inject humor into these miniature comments on army life that include images of wives and sweethearts and soldiers enjoying themselves on leave. This card depicts Zouaves, soldiers who belonged to Union volunteer regiments with North African-inspired uniforms distinguished by baggy trousers, short jackets, and tasseled caps. Belgische Riddertrouw. 1830.Cartoon on Belgian generals Dainen and Kessels, 1830. To the right of the River Schelde are the Belgian insurgents Louis de Potter and General Herman Kessels with a horse drinking beer from a Pul Lambic. The Potter holds a large pot 'De Libertait' above its head. The Dutch General Nicolas Joseph Daine depends on a gallway of which the rope is knocking. He is saved by the whale from Kessels referred to as 'national congress'.

Storming the Castle - "Old "Abe" on Guard 1860 Currier & Ives This political cartoon responds to the Presidential campaign of 1860 where Abraham Lincoln represented the Republican party, running against John Bell of the Consitutional Union party and Stephen Douglas, nominated by the Democrats. Dressed as a "Wide Awake," a group of young supporters of the Republicans, Lincoln sports a cape and military cap while carrying a lantern and rail-shaped pike. Rounding the corner of a building labeled the "White House," he discovers his opponents trying to break in. Bell acts as lookout for Douglas who attempts to open the door with skeleton keys, while the current presiden James Buchanan struggles to pull John Breckenridge in through a window.. A Quartet of ragged, Starving Musicians play Mozart to newcomers to a concentration Camp as the music of death plays unceasingly in the gas chambers they will soon enter... It's one of the most poignant and haunting pictures of the Holocaust. But one concentration camp in Nazi Europe was different. Music and the arts allowed to flourish, after a fashion. There were no gas chambers or executions officially death was not allowed. The Camp was Theresienstadt, 60km from Prague. A Nazi showpiece, a Camp unique in the Nazi regime of genocide. Here composers could compose, poets write and artists paint. One children's opera was performed 55 times. Here a Jewish boy penned his poignant poem The Butterfly. April 10, 1991.

'The laying of the cable---John, and Jonathan joining hands,' 1858, celebrates the successful completion of the first Atlantic telegraph cable in August 1858. Unhappily, the cable failed after transmitting only 732 telegraphic messages because high-voltage damaged the cables insulation. It took 5 years to finance the second cable, this one redesigned and twice as heavy as the first (BSLOC_2019_8_149)
