. Near-Earth Asteroids July 2023. Near-Earth objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets that orbit the Sun like the planets with orbits that come within 30 million miles of Earths orbit. NASA established the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) to manage the agencys ongoing efforts in Planetary Defense, which is the applied planetary science to address the NEO impact hazard. One key element of the PDCO is NASAs NEO Observations program, which is composed of projects to find, track, and characterize NEOs. Heres what weve found so far. Mars Samples Proposed Containment and Transport. This illustration shows the proposed process for safely recovering, containing, and transporting Mars samples gathered by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover after they are returned to Earth as part of the joint NASA/ESA (European Space Agency) Mars Sample Return Campaign. The process of carefully containing and handling the samples would begin long before they arrive on Earth. Every phase of the Mars Sample Return campaign from collection and sealing to launch, transfer, and landing has been developed with a safety first approach. Sample handling and curation experts would be involved in planning for the round trip at each phase of the campaign. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A presentation by the University of Central Florida is on display at the KSC Visitor Complex for this year's NASA MarsPort Engineering Design Student Competition 2002 conference. Participants are presenting papers on engineering trade studies to design optimal configurations for a MarsPort Deployable Greenhouse for operation on the surface of Mars. Judges in the competition were from KSC, Dynamac Corporation and Florida Institute of Technology. The winning team's innovative ideas will be used by NASA to evaluate and study other engineering trade concepts.
