Date: ca. 1850-55.The melophone, which was invented in Paris in 1837, was developed for classical music. The inventor, the music-box maker Pierre Charles Leclerc, persuaded the composer Fromentin Halévy to include a melophone solo in his opera Guido et Ginevra in 1838-and this opened the doors to the salons of many Paris opera patrons. But the success of the melophone was modest; its use declined, and it fell out of style in the 1850s and 60s. Beside its occasional use in the salons in France, it was also known in Italy and southern Germany. The melophone is a free-reed instrument related to accordions, concertinas, reed organs, and harmonicas. The setup, with a double bellows and a push-and-draw lever, allows the player to perform tremolo and staccato, soft and loud. The thumb lever is an octave coupler. Angelo Manello emigrated from Italy in 1885 and established a mandolin factory in New York that in the early 1900s employed up to seventy-five makers, including artists for the decorative work. This instrument has a body of thirty-two fluted birds-eye maple ribs as well as mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell veneers. View more. Mandolin. American. 1900. Mandolin 500553Mandolin 1898 Orville Gibson Orville Gibson is one of the most important makers and innovators of fretted stringed instruments. He is credited with the invention of the archtop guitar and mandolin, which both take construction elements from the violin. This mandolin is a rare surviving instrument by Orville Gibson and features a design consistent with his 1898 patent mandolin drawings. This includes a carved top and back with a floating bridge and tailpiece. The mandolin's sides, neck, and headstock are made from a single piece of walnut that is carved into the final form. The back is also a carved piece of walnut that is convex. The top (soundboard) is made of spruce and also carved into a convex shape and has a large oval soundhole. Another element of the Gibson patent, and present on this instrument, is that the neck is hollow and meant to extend the resonant sound chamber of the instrument. The instrument is shaped like a teardrop, a design that would later become known as a Model Mini wooden guitar model on a white backgroundGuitar icon set.
