A.D. 120-130 Roman This fragment of an altar is from a commemorative monument in which identifying inscriptions would have appeared on the shaft below the three portrait busts. Sincethat part of the altar is now missing, the relationship between the figures is not known. The woman at the center, whose hairstyle suggests a date in the earlysecond century A.D., is the main focus of attention and so is thought to be the mother of the two men, who look respectfully toward her. It may be that they died first, and their grieving mother, who is presented in a more lifelike pose, was left to set up this monument.. Marble pediment of a funerary altar 248898

Mrs Potter Palmer 1871 United States. The prominent Chicago art collectors and philanthropists Bertha and Potter Palmer commissioned a pair of marble portrait busts during their wedding trip to Europe in 1871 (see Mr. Potter Palmer). Among the first works of art they purchased, the busts are indicative of the naturalistic, yet classically refined style of Hiram Powers, a well-known American sculptor who lived in Florence. Powers immortalized the couple in a dignified and graceful manner suitable to their social station. The Palmers were among the first Americans to avidly collect French Impressionist painting, and much of their collection now belongs to the Art Institute. The Colossus of Constantine was a colossal acrolithic statue of the late Roman emperor Constantine the Great (c. 280-337) that once occupied the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius near the Forum Romanum in Rome. Portions of the Colossus now reside in the Courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori of the Musei Capitolini, on the Capitoline Hill, above the west end of the Forum. The great head, arms and legs of the Colossus were carved from white marble, while the rest of the body consisted of a brick core and wooden framework, possibly covered with gilded bronze. (Acrolithic means 'stone at the extremities'. ) Judging by the size of the remaining pieces, the seated, enthroned figure would have been about 12 m (40 ft) high. The head is about 2 ½ m high and each foot is over 2 m long.
