Gauri 1894-99 India, Maharasthra, Pune Gauri is an expression of a tender form of Parvati, the wife and consort of Shiva. In this image, Gauri is represented portrait-like, as if a depiction of a young woman of beauty, not of divinity. Her other’ status is asserted only by the crown she wears, which along with her radiant halo, defines her divine status. In all other respects, she could be mistaken for a young woman prepared for her wedding day.The lower register of the print declares the goddess’s name in devanagari script, along with the name of the press "Ravi Varma Press, Karla-Lonavia", in both English and Hindi. The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) was a French naturalist and explorer who made several voyages to southeast Asia between 1769 and 1781. He published this two-volume account of his voyage of 1774-81 in 1782. Volume 1 deals exclusively with India, whose culture Sonnerat very much admired, and is especially noteworthy for its extended discussion of religion in India, Hinduism in particular. The book is illustrated with engravings based on Sonnerat's drawings. Among the most interesting illustrations are Sonnerat's pictures of various Hindu deities.

The Medawala Rajamaha Viharaya or Tempitiya Vihara, north of Kandy is a typical tempath vihara, a small wooden image house or shrine, placed on stilts or piles. The tempath vihara can be regarded as Kandys most significant contribution to Buddhist architecture, but there are not many specimen of its kind left. Some of the frescoes in the Rajamaha Viharaya depict the king and the royal family; but they also depict the everyday life of the commoners, such as a farmer tilling his field with the help of a white bull. One enigmatic painting shows a recumbent Buddha, sleeping safely tucked away behind a mosquito net. Though the frescoes exhibit all the hallmarks of the 18th century, the original construction of the Raja Mahavihara is said to go back to much earlier times. Despite the artistic merit of the frescoes, the most remarkable single feature in the image house is the small ivory figure of a Buddha. The figure is surrounded by an intricately carved wooden shrine.

Wayang is a Javanese word for particular kinds of theatre (literally 'shadow'). When the term is used to refer to kinds of puppet theatre, sometimes the puppet itself is referred to as wayang. Performances of shadow puppet theatre are accompanied by gamelan in Java. UNESCO designated Wayang Kulit, a shadow puppet theatre and the best known of the Indonesian wayang, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November 2003.

A love scene between Radha and Lord Krishna ; India

Nang talung' is the shadow puppet theatre popular in southern Thailand. It is an art form said to have originated as early as 400 BC in Southeast Asia. Performances usually last well into the night and remain an essential if diminishing part of village life in Thailand's Deep South. Nang means animal hide, from which the figures are cut. Talung refers to Phatthalung, a town in southern Thailand where the art form is said to have originated. It is the task of a single skilled person, the 'nai nag' or puppet master, to create the whole show. Sitting behind an illuminated screen, he maneuvers up to six puppets per scene. The changing tone of the puppeteers voice differentiates between the characters, while a band of musicians adds tension to the story. While the more formal 'nang yai' is based on the Hindu epic the Ramayana known as the Ramakien in Thai 'nang talung' takes its inspiration from everyday life.

Gopi is a word of Sanskrit origin meaning 'cow-herd girl'. In Hinduism specifically the name gopi (sometimes gopika) is used more commonly to refer to the group of cow herding girls famous within Vaishnava Theology for their unconditional devotion (Bhakti) to Krishna as described in the stories of Bhagavata Purana and other Puranic literatures.
