An artist's conception of the Clipper of the near future -- the Boeing 707 -- is pictured at the bottom. PAA has ordered 20 of these jet propelled airliners, the first to be delivered in December, 1958, as well as 25 Douglas DC-8 jetliners. Both aircraft will have cruising speeds of 575 miles per hour and will be able to make the 2400-mile flight from Honolulu to San Francisco in 4½ hours. December 7, 1955.

Comet Takes Off On World's First Jetliner Service -- 'Good luck' waves to the Comet as she took off on her historic flight at London Airport to-day.The world's first regular jetliner service was opened to-day (Friday) when the 36-seater de Havilland Comet G-ALYP of British Overseas Airways took off from London Airport on the inaugural passenger carrying flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.The journey of 6,724 miles is scheduled to take less than 24 hours, including stops; actual flying time is 18 hours 40 minutes. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Kennedy Space Center Director Lee Scherer receives an Ambassador Plenipotentary certificate after successfully landing the NASA-6 aircraft on the runway at the Shuttle Landing Facility. This was the first touchdown of an aircraft on Kennedy's Shuttle Landing Facility. The certificate reads 'Be it known that Lee Scherer is hereby appointed Ambassador Plenipotentary in recognition of his aeronautical skills in bringing the old to the new by having an antique aircraft and an antique pilot land on the world's newest runway.
