The Army Air Forces lent the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory a Bell P-63A King Cobra in October 1943 to complement the lab's extensive efforts to improve the Allison V-1710 engine. The V-1710-powered P-63A was a single-seat fighter that could reach speeds of 410 miles per hour and an altitude of 43,000 feet. The fighter, first produced in 1942, was an improvement on Bells P-39, but persistent performance problems at high altitudes prevented its acceptance by the Air Corps. Instead many of the P-63s were transferred to the Soviet Union. Almost every test facility at the NACAs engine lab was used to study the Allison V-1710 engine and its supercharger during World War II. Researchers were able to improve the efficiency, capacity and pressure ratio of the supercharger. They found that improved cooling significantly reduced engine knock in the fuel. The Royal Navy during the Second World War A Lend Lease American Vought-Sikorsky Kingfisher aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm (FAA)departs on patrol from the slipway leading to the River Tay at RNAS Stannergate or HMS Condor II located at Dundee, Scotland. This base was a satellite of the nearby HMS Condor, another FAA base, at Arbroath, Angus.

Flying Boat Moored on Thames. The London Thames carried a different boat yesterday this 35-ton Short Solent, largest of Britain's commercial flying boats. The Solent, first flying boat to land in the London area for twenty-one years, touched down at Limehouse Reach and taxied up the river through the Tower Bridge. This Superfortress, flight leader in 29 combat missions over Tokio, and other important Japanese cities, arrived in Sydney yesterday on its way to Melbourne. Lent by General MacArthur to aid Australia's Fourth Victory Loan, this plane, which has been re-named Waltzing Matilda, will visit all Australian airfields that can accommodate it to give bond buyers special flights. The F.D.L. is so called because its wing plan form resembles the Greek letter Delta.
