With respect to size - the Coast Guard plane "dwarfs" the camera, yet this 9-lens wonder camera of the Coast and Geodetic Survey - the only one of its kind in the world - it is valued at $100,000. The cost of the plane was in the neighborhood of $200,000. This plane, a converted B-17, flying fortress of World War II fame, has been especially modified for map-making and carries the wonder camera on map-making flights for eight to ten months of each year. Eight Coast guardsmen "man" the plane - two members of the Coast and Geodetic Survey operate the camera. On a recent "mission" the two camera operators were ex-coast guardsmen - making it a real "family affair".Royal Air Force Fighter Command, 1939-1945.
