Lockheed NC-130B (AF58-712) Aircraft. A Study of STOL Operational Techniques; landing approach. Nose-low pitch attitude of the aircraft was required in wave-off (or go-around) at 85 knots with flaps 70 degrees. An increase in stall-speed margin could be required to produce a more positive climb angle. STS080-S-009 (7 Dec. 1996) --- Just prior to main gear touchdown, the space shuttle Columbia is pictured during landing on Runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center's (KSC) Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF). Landing occurred at 6:49 a.m. (EST), Dec. 7, 1996 marking a total duration only eight hours short of 18 days. The landing is the 33rd at KSC for the Space Transportation System (STS). Crewmembers aboard were astronauts Kenneth D. Cockrell, mission commander; and Kent V. Rominger, pilot; along with Story Musgrave, Tamara E. Jernigan and Thomas D. Jones, all mission specialists.

Airliner Lands After North Pole Flight The first commercial flight over the north pole ends with the safe arrival at Copenhagen Airport today November 16 of the Scandinavian airlines "Royal Viking" airliner. The plane took off 20 hours 49 minutes previously from Los Angeles and covered the 5,800 miles in three Hops, stops being made in Canada and Greenland. November 16, 1954. Alarm message investigation and rescue service. 39 nautical miles to the west of Helgoland is a collision between the Norwegian tanker Anne Mildred Brøvig and the English coastal Pentland. The Norwegian tanker is sinking. Around 16,000 tons of crude oil in the North Sea has ended up in the collision. A grumpman tracker of airplane squadron 2 (4) and a Neptune of airplane squadron 320 are on the spot.

Air Adds To Army's Striking Power -- Landing increased punch to America's armoured forces in the near future will be this tank-carrying transport plane - a turbo-prop version of the U.S. Air Force's C-124 transport. This artist's conception of the new plane - designated the YC-124B-shows the aircraft loaded with an Army light tank.The new plane, now under construction, will be powered by four Pratt & Whitney turbo-prop engines rated at 5,500 horsepower each.Installation of the new engines is expected to increase speed, range, payload, rate of climb and service ceiling and to decrease take-off distance. The bullet-shaped appendages on wing-tips are heating units for thermal de-icing of leading edges of both wings.The YC-124B is scheduled for its first flight in the spring of 1952. January 27, 1951. "Flying Boxcar" Takes Cars From Berlin. An American car from Blookaded Berlin is loaded into a United States Air Force "Flying Boxcar" (C-81) at Tempelhof Airport, September 14. The aircraft is the first of its kind to be introduced on the Berlin "Air-Life" and the car is the first of many American-owned vehicles that are to be flown out of the German capital. The HL-10 Lifting Body completes its first research flight with a landing on Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards AFB, California, on December 22, 1966. The HL-10 suffered from buffeting and poor control during the flight. Pilot Bruce Peterson was able to make a successful landing despite the severe problems. These were traced to airflow separation from the fins. As a result, the fins were no longer able to stabilize the vehicle. A small reshaping of the fins' leading edges cured the airflow separation, but it was not until March 15, 1968, that the second HL-10 flight occurred.
