Looping The Loop With A "Barrier Breaker" -- This is one of a set of photographs taken during a loop by Britain's fastest jet fighter, the Hawker Hunter, flown by chief test pilot Neville Duke. The photographs were taken from a Meteor flying parallel between the wing tips at the start of each loop being only 20 feet. The Hunter was, of course, throttled well below its normal performance so that the Meteor could keep up with it. November 07, 1952.

Suez Canal Blocked -- The aerial view shows some 36-ships held up in Suez Harbour Bay, waiting for the canal to be cleared.Shipping from all over the world is held up in the Suez Canal by an accident last Friday. When the liberian tanker "world peace" smashed into the road and rail bridge across the canal at El Ferdan nine miles north of Ismailia. It tore away a span, ending up with the 350-ton span jammed into one end of the bank with the other end of the span resting on the tanker's superstructure. The accident, worst in the 85-year history of the canal will, it is expected, block the canal for at least eight days. January 2, 1955. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A medium close up of the gondola of Nulli Secundus II with Cody aboard and handlers on ground. This was an enlarged version of the original Nulli Secundus and used the same Antoinette Engine. The airship was only operated for around two months before being scrapped.

The secret test of the Bell YP-59A Airacomet in the spring of 1944 was the first investigation in the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Aircraft Engine Research Laboratorys new Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT). The Airacomet, powered by two General Electric I-A centrifugal turbojets, was the first US jet aircraft. The Airacomets 290-miles per hour speed, however, was dwarfed by the German Messerschmitt Me-262 Schwalbes 540 miles per hour. In 1941 and 1942 General Electric built the first US jet engines based on technical drawings from British engineer Frank Whittle. Bell Aircraft was contracted to produce an airframe to incorporate the new engines. The result was the Bell XP-59A Airacomet. The aircraft made its first flight over Muroc Lake, California, on October 2, 1942. The aircraft continued to struggle over the next year and the NACA was asked to test it in the new AWT. A Bell YP-59A was flown from the Bell plant in Buffalo to Cleveland by Bob Stanley, who had piloted

Aerial view of Hughes Flying-boat seaplane under construction at its dock in Long Beach, 1947. The prototype was named 'Hughes H-4 Hercules', but better known as the 'Spruce Goose' because of its wood (birch) construction. Developed as a troop transport, it was six times larger than any aircraft of its time. On Nov. 2, 1947 it made its only test flight, because the war that caused its creation was over. Culver City, California: July 7, 1946 Howard Hughes sits in the cockpit of his new XF-11 plane, built in conjunction with the Army Air Material Command. It crashed on its flight, and Hughes was taken to a hospital with 3rd degree burns. It is reportedly one of the world's fastest planes and can attain speeds of over 400 mile per hour.

Escape in Eight-Foot Kayak. Cuban refugee Lauriano Yglesias and his girl friend, Consuelo Rivera Luiz, escaped Cuba in this homemade eight foot kayak and were picked up by the Coast Guard Cutter Shoalwater on 13 September 1966, about 34 miles east of Marathon, Florida. The craft was powered by a lawn mower engine.

Sailplane Pilots Conquer The Matterhorn -- A new area has been opened for the gliding and Soaring planes at Zermatt, the world-famous mountaineering centre in the Swiss Alps, the "King" of Zermatt, the matterhorn, where many of the-most-intrepid climbers have met their deaths in attempts to reach the peak, has already been circled by Sailplanes more han once. The first crossing of the Bernese Alps from South to North by Sailplane has also been made. A Sailplane taking off. Ss Bremen This image was taken by a reconnaissance aircraft of Bomber Command and show the Atlantic Liner SS BREMEN after her disastrous fire at her dock in Bremerhaven. The image shows smoke pouring from BREMEN'S bow and stern, while amidships she appears to be burnt out. Three small craft are also visible in the image and are being used in a vain attempt to put out the fire.

Ice Patrol Plane sights massive Iceberg. A U.S. Coast Guard HC-130-B "Hercules" Ice Patrol plane tracks a massive iceberg sighted alone the Grand Banks off Newfoundland through the powerful binoculars of an observer seated at a side window of the plane. The observer, who is specially trained in determining the size, direction and speed of bergs, enters the sighting and distance calculations taken by Radar in his log. After the flight his entry is checked against the Loran position fix obtained by the navigator during the flight. From this data the location of the iceberg is accurately determined and charted back at International Ice Patrol Headquarters.

Several tows were made before liftoff was attempted to check the control rigging and to familiarize the pilot with the vehicles ground stability. As the pilots confidence and experience increased, tow speeds were also increased until liftoff was attained. Liftoff was at about 40 knots indicated airspeed (kias).
