Northwind "Dew Line" 1955. As the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind leads Navy Task Force ships returning westward from an eastern section of the top of Alaska on "Dew Line" (Distant Early Warning radar stations) operations, the trip proves hazardous. Looking past the Northwind's fantail can be seen the Coast Guard's sorties towing the cargo ship Andromeda, her rudder having been damaged by ice. A number of other ships suffered damage on this mission (picture taken on the "Dew Line" September 9, 1955) due to cotton thick fog, shifting ice, wind and snow storms such as not experienced in 10 years during Arctic summer months. The Northwind, a heavy duty icebreaker, a veteran of the Arctic and Antarctic, and the Storis, combination buoy tender and utility icebreaker built for lighter ice work, will again join a Task Force Group supporting the Military Sea Transportation Service's summer 1956 "Dew Line" push, beginning in late July.

Taking Deep Sea Temperatures with Bathythermograph. Donald C. Bailey, Chief Aerographer's Mate, USCG, 32, native of Bellaire, Michigan, retrieves a bathythermograph instrument for recording deep sea temperatures during an oceanographic survey of the Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND. Chief Bailey was a working member of an oceanographic team during the NORTHWIND's surveys of the Oyashio Current, East Siberian Sea, Northern Bering Sea and other areas during the summer 1962 Bering Sea Patrol. The data collected will provide important information on the development of marine life which is important to the Alaskan fisheries. The 269-ft. Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND is based at Seattle and performs the summer Bering Sea Patrol annually, as well as other missions into the Alaskan and Arctic waters. During the summer Bering Sea Patrol she carries out in addition to oceanographic surveys the health mission phase of the patrol in which she delivers dental and medical aid to natives in isolat

South Polar Tow Job. An episode in the Byrd Expedition. The Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND gives a tow line to the YANCEY. In this instance, the passage which the NORTHWIND had already broken open for the thin-hulled ships of the expedition, froze over before the YANCEY could get through. The NORTHWIND backed down and took her in tow.
