Boscastle, Cornwall -- Although seen at its finest from the land during a storm, it is only in fair weather that the harbour of Boscastle, Cornwall, provides anchorage for owners of small craft. With its narrow entrance and sharp S-bend to negotiate a yachtsman must be very alert in entering the harbour. This picture was taken recently by a staff photographer of The Times. November 5, 1934.

Kobe is the sixth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, approximately 500 km west of Tokyo. Kobe is a prominent port city with a population of about 1.5 million. The city is located in the Kansai region of Japan and is part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto. Keihanshin in turn is part of the Taiheiyō Belt, a megalopolis. Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake diminished much of Kobe's prominence as a port city, it remains Japan's fourth busiest container port.

Steamer in Lake Thun, Switzerland Made 1855-1865 France. Adolphe Braun first took up photography as an aid in his burgeoning wallpaper and textile design business, concentrating on the floral and other stillñlife compositions that brought him international acclaim. Around 1859 he began to focus on making largeñformat, panoramic, and stereoscopic views of locales in Switzerland and Germany, which he marketed to the emerging tourist audience. Within about 10 years he had amassed a catalogue of around 6,000 stereoscopic views and more than 500 panoramas, which were sold near tourist destinations and in curio shops. In this image of Lake Thun, bordering Interlaken, Switzerland, Braun portrayed a snaking waterway framed by mountains on either side, an imagemodeled on picturesque painted landscapes..
