The Last Days of Pompeii James Hamilton (American, 1819-1878). The Last Days of Pompeii, 1864. Oil on canvas, 59 15/16 x 48 1/16 in. (152.2 x 122 cm). The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. and subsequent devastation of Pompeii (in present-day Italy) was a popular and fascinating narrative in the mid-eighteenth century, particularly among Romantic painters on both sides of the Atlantic. At that time the volcano began a sustained period of renewed activity. Simultaneously, archaeologists began excavations of the ancient buried city. Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto (1697-1768). Landscape with a Villa seen through a ruined Arch. Oil on canvas. Images of picturesque ruins shown with recognisable buildings and colourful local figures were very popular with travellers to Italy. Canaletto's art was so admired by British collectors that he worked in London for several years between 1746 and 1755.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, The Fighting Temeraire, and Arth from the Lake of Zug. This water-color is titled Lausanne. Hoever, it may be Berne, or merely a Turnerian Swiss dream of flushed spires, and a dim foreground where anything may be happening This shows the city at sunset and was painted 1841-1842.

The Tower of Babel, according to the Book of Genesis, was an enormous tower built in the plain of Shinar. According to the biblical account, a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language and migrating from the east, came to the land of Shinar, where they resolved to build a city with a tower 'with its top in the heavens...lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the Earth'.

Because woodcuts emulate the artist's drawing style, prints after Titian's designs are very different from those of the German master Albrecht Dürer. Whereas Dürer's woodcuts exemplify controlcrosshatching and parallel lines of shading are precise and uniformTitian's lines in the Venetian manner are drawn with vigorous strokes that are bold, expressive, and irregular. An enormous, complex design, The Submersion of Pharaoh's Army in the Red Sea reflects the strength of Titian's drawing, which propels the narrative across several woodblocks to achieve a remarkable unity. The rolling clouds and turbulent sea culminate in the solid gravity of the magnificent cliff that overhangs the shore.
