Pustules on a dairymaid's arm infected with cow-pox. From Edward Jenner 'Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae', London, 1798. Jenner proved that infection with Cowpox could provide immunity to the far more dangerous Smallpox.

He is nude from the waist down, and a round scar is visible at the top of his right thigh where it meets the torso. A tall wooden measuring stick stands next to him, held in place between his right arm and the crutch he leans on. Norwood standing with two wooden crutches under his arms. His shirt is rolled up and he is nude from the waist down. He rests his right foot on a small stack of books. A chair with decorative tassels sits on the left side of the image, and an iron stand behind Private Norwood is visible between his legs.
