War of Roussillon, also called War of the Pyrenees or War of the Convention, (1793-1795). Conflict between the Spain of Charles IV and the First French Republic. Demolition of the Pyramid of Roncesvalles after the occupation by French troops. It was an ancient monument that the tradition of those places venerated for the defeat, true or fabulous, of the French in that valley under the emperor Charlemagne. In memory of that event, the Spaniards had erected a pyramid on the battlefield. The army of the Western Pyrenees, having won a victory over the Spaniards, avenged this ancient humiliation. 'Both Sides of the Question' is an 1868 political cartoon about the first Presidential election after the US Civil War. On right, are Republican candidates, Ulysses Grant and Schulyer Coxfax, accompanied by Union generals and politicians. At left are the Democratic candidates, Horatio Seymour and Francis Blair, with Confederate generals and politicians. Artist Thomas Nast leaves no doubt that both he, and 'Harper's Weekly', decry the possibility of a Democratic win. In the end, the popular vote was close, but the electoral vote clearly favored the Republican Grant, 214 to 80 (BSLOC_2018_10_110)

An elephant steeplechase which took place at Rangoon, on the eastern branch of the Irrawaddy river on 25 May 1858. British officers of the garrison at Rangoon rode the 13 elephants dressed in jockey costume with a staff and flag instead of a whip and the animals were steered by Mahouts who received some of the winnings in the sweepstake.
